An axe to grind

I always appreciated a nice double bit axe:

And a handy boys axe. This one is a Norlund I got lucky and traded some tree work for. These are crazy expensive now the are "collectors".
Regardless this axe gets used a lot. It is small, handy and great for camp chores outside of heavy splitting.

I use the boys axe for making anchor stakes on the back country trips I guided my family on. Easier to make necessary stakes each night fron available branches.
Our sil tarp was huge. Big enough to shelter 4 peeps and a dog, our gear and room to spare. I prefer them to tents in summer/fall.

Lots of guylines though...

There is something romantic about an old axe or hatchet. I prefer older stuff because of the connection I feel to when I was a kid reading everything mountain man I could get my hands on.

I decided a long time ago if I wasn't living an outside lifestyle I wasn't living. My step kids got that put into their life when I came along like it or not.

I realized I had set my life up to do three basic things: 1) allow me to use the cool machines I saw growing up and had match box versions of 2) acquire a couple of the guns I dreamed endlessly about having but could not afford as a kid and 3) actually doing the things I had read about others doing in the wilderness.

Dad made a career out of logging. Early on he started cutting timber. He still had a falling axe when he went to chainsaws. My brother and I used it to split wood when we were kids. The axe hit dirt and rocks so many times that both cheeks were short. The bits were rounded out on the outer end where it went first into the ground after going through the wood block.
I found that old axe under a shelf in the woodshed several years after dad passed away. I took it home and cleaned it up and set a new handle in it. I gave it to my oldest daughter as a souvenir. Maybe I can get her to send me a picture of it.
A falling axe is similar to jhg's double bitted one. On a new double bitted falling axe, the bit is narrower and the cheeks a little longer than on jhg's axe.
