Fun and frustration in the elk Woods

Postby Lefty » 09 13, 2022 •  [Post 1]

Tonight was a calamity of errors, and some mistakes, and some errors by hunters and Elk.Fortunate for the Elk they all came out alive.

Earlier tonight after a long hike in and down we got close to what we thought was a bugling elk.
Eventually Andrew and Julie follow the bugling elk and decided it was a guy messing with us. I came out of the woods 200 yards away from the pickup and there was a funky bull elk, a 5x6 50 ft for my pickup.

And that funky 5x6 had is 3x4 raghorn Buddy and a his friend Spike.
Julie and Andrew are walking up to the pickup and the bull bugles ,Julie thought she was too far for a shot at 40 yards, Andrew ranged it at 30 while the bull is staring back at him .unfortunately. Andrew's gotten really good at making all sorts of bugles and bull elk sounds and he screamed a challenge at two of the bull and all three bulls take off running.

I would cow call all three bulls back and Andrew would challenge bugle again.

The whole thing was really hilarious to watch but.

I think I'll go cry now.

sure would have been a nice pack-out!

He sounds like he hasn't gained enough experience to know when to shut up and when to shoot. I've been there too.
I hunt therefore I am. I fish therefore I lie.

I told Andrew I could live with an easy pack out once or twice in a lifetime.

I've had hunts that ended before they started, Really is nothing memorable about them. I did have a quick goose hunt that I was glad ended quickly. The geese were coming in before the decoys were set, That was kind of nice, just a miserable day to be out there.
