Decided to go scope out a spot where i killed a bear 3 years ago. Went tiptoeing through the timber and the carpet of berries hoping to see a bear. One popped out 30 yards from me, feeding my way while i was taking pics. When it got to about 20 yards i noticed a little blonde cub behind it. Uh oh. I announced my presence when i saw the cub. They were already 20 yards and walking toward me. Figured if they were any closer before they saw me itd turn into a real rodeo. Drew my gun. Started talking to her and walking backward. Cub ran up a tree. Mom stood on her hind legs and huffed at me. Good times.

It has been super dry here,no acorns and berries are few and far between. I did have a blonde bear scouting around my barn. Probably looking for away to get into the tack room where the sweet feed is stored. There are a lot of muley fawns around. I imagine the bears are taking a few of them.

Whitey, that's a good reminder to take your time and identify your target before shooting. Those cubs are still small, and hard to see in tall berry bushes. A lot of guys would have seen a nice bear with a good crease down the head and shot without waiting a minute or two to check for cubs.

I was scouting new ground this morning for bear hunting. Have plenty of good spots, but i enjoy hunting unfamiliar ground, and you never know when forest fires or logging might screw up your best spots on any given year. So went up a mountain ive never been on and it looks like real, perfect prime bear country. Lots of berries, water, perfect combination of dark timber, open forest, and jungly stuff. Up near the top theres a bunch of flat wet grassy marshy small meadows with little seeps and thimbleberries surrounded by timber and huckleberries. Couldnt ask for a better spot. Berries are all still green there though, so ill wait until the 2nd week of august to go hunt it. Looks like a real bear haven. Hung a camera up which will probably get destroyed, as i cut my hand and bled on it.

It was not a good berry year around home. It was wet for too long, so I do not think the flowers were pollinated. Maybe there will be some berries left when I go east.

What do you call those shiny blue upright berries? We have something very similar here, probably the same thing, but they almost always grow singly. I have a book that i cant find, that i used to look them up once. Cant remember the name, just remember that it seemed it was a bad idea to eat them. For people anyway.

Oregon grape? Ground Holly! Grows a lot of places

ll three are evergreen and have the characteristic holly-like leaf shape, some more pointed and prickly than others. Woody-stemmed and spreading by rhizomes, the new growth in the spring emerges in a light green to soft coppery-red color; at the other end of the year the foliage responds to colder weather by taking on shades of bright red to burgundy - truly lovely in the grayed winter landscape.

In early-spring, the plant is topped with sprays of small bright yellow fragrant flowers in a long-blooming display that attract bees, hummingbirds and other pollinators to the garden. Following the bloom are clusters of dusky blue, round to oblong berries that are the "grapes" that give it its common name.

The berries are edible, though not always palatable, as they are often quite tart. Recipes for jelly usually combine the juice of Oregon grape with that of the sweeter salal berries or apple concentrate. The root has traditional medicinal properties, and along with the yellow inner bark has been used as a dye. There are many sources of information about these uses but here are two at Bosky Dell Natives: Recipes from Bosky Dell Natives and an article on teas by Judy Bluehorse Skelton, herbalist and educator (Thank you to Bosky Dell Natives).

Well this afternoon about 2pm i let a young idiot bear get almost into baseball bat range before i decided to shoo him off. Maybe we will cross paths again in a few years. And first thing this morning i heard a bear ripping up logs etc not far below me, but he never materialized and he wasnt in a spot that i felt calling to him or trying to stalk him would be wise. Im in a good area though. Cant hunt tomorrow, but after tomorrow im hunting every day, barring unpredictable circumstances like a nail in the tire. Berries are sure looking great. Think i spent as much time today stuffing my face with huckleberries as i spent bear hunting. A guys gotta enjoy the little things in life.

Good luck Dean. I'm heading out tomorrow afternoon to spend the weekend glassing avalanche chutes that hopefully have wild blackberry and mountain huckleberry ripening at the bottom ends of them. The bears were eating the grass on the open faces above them a month ago, so I know they're in the area.

25 minutes of fawn bleats, nice older sow came in real slow and casual. Stopped calling when she got close and then she lost interest. After a few minutes i had to stand up abd shoot off hand, about 50 yards.

Were you using casual fawn bleats, or distressed fawn bleats?

Ill be real interested to see what the tooth age results are. Canines look good but all the front teeth, top and bottom, are worn to the gumline, with little black spots in the middle, like the core of the teeth exposed. Didnt look at the molars.

Just called one in to <30 yards, came from straight behind and slightly upslope with a bunch of brush in the way. Had to stand up and turn around and he saw me and stopped with a bunch of thick brush in the way then he left.

Shouldnt have stood up. Should have rolled over, layed prone and waited for him to pop out of the ceanothus 5 yards away. First bear ive called in since that sow i killed on the 5th, and i screwed it up.

Finding HUGE piles of bear turds all over where im at right now. One was wet fresh. Im just going to sit here for a few hours, then call again. Im about 500 yards from where i called in the sneaky jerk bear this morning

Good luck tonight. Kill one before the sauna forest up again this week. I had a trip planned Thursday thru Sunday but I may delay it for the heat. Don't feel like dealing with a bear on a backpack hunt when its 100. Don't feel like back pack hunting when it's 100 period.

Almost had a big chocolate at 630 this morning. Waited a minute too long to move on him. Tried to call him back, no dice.

Couldnt tell if he was getting closer or further. Listening to him feeding below me. Heard him breathing. By the time i decided he was moving further, i started sneaking up just in time to see him pop out of the draw, cross the bend in trail in front of me, and go uphill into thick stuff and i couldnt get a shot. If ida just played it a little more aggressive, snuck another 30 or 40 yards up the trail a minute earlier, id have had him.

How many times have we all experienced that situation. We've taught ourselves to be patient because we've been busted time and time again being too aggressive. Then the time comes where we need to be aggressive and don't. That's hunting. I postponed my trip this weekend but will be going two of the next three. Berries will be just starting next weekend where I'm going.

Definitely old. I'd be curious to see the calcification when it's all cleaned up.

You were dang close on that one at 13. A 25 year old anything in the wild is really impressive.

I was trying to be conservative guessing the older one at 19. Nobody wants to be the guy that says his buck scores 180, only to have it tape out at 142.

I was 14 years old, in junior high when that bear was born. Hard to fathom that shes been up there doing bear things that whole time. Im 40 years old and shes been roaming the woods since i was a kid.
