Postby wawhitey » 05 07, 2022 •  [Post 1]

Im looking for a word here. You know all the bumps and wrinkles on antlers near the base? I swear at some point i heard an actual name for that, but i cant for the life of me remember. I even tried the idiots method of asking my phone, with no success. So does anybody know what thats called?

I shot a whitetail in 2019 with giant hole in his antler. What do you call that?

The scientific term is "rack nostril"

I was going to Google "rack nostril" but I was afraid of what might pop-up. Either way, that doesn't sound like the scientific term??

I thought I knew the answer but this is what I found

The small, bead-like structures that form in rows up the antler beam are used like a rasp to make rubs. These bumps are called "pearls" by scientists. The abundance and prominence of pearls is a sure indicator of nutrition. If they're absent or faint, the buck probably had a nutrition problem during antler development.
