Non-stick pans

Postby Jhg » 02 20, 2022 •  [Post 1]

What are your cast iron memories?
My mom had 3 or 4 cast iron pans that she used regularly. Then, when my grandfather died, we acquired a huge 14 inch griswold pan that I first remember seeing at duck camp when I was about 8. I inherited those and then added more over the years. I have a couple dutch ovens, a 26 inch long griddle, and round griddles that are perfect for omelettes. I got deep pans. Muffin pans and lids.
The reason I have all these old cast iron pans is how beautifully done the castings are. Smooth, and flat. Sometimes thinner than you might think is possible. The big 4-teener is lighter than many newer 12 inch pans I see in stores.

Here is a picture of some of them. We use them all the time and when they are treated right are non-stick. The original. Never to be improved upon.

The fire ring. Bonus if your pans have one. They cook better over flame than ones without.

When I was a kid, we had cast iron. I don't think they made the nonskid ones yet. At least I never heard of them. Mom made ours slick with bacon grease, but now we use a little olive oil. I have just one cast iron pan with a lid that I take to hunting camp. We have a couple here at home. We use a crock pot here more than the cast stuff, but I still like the cast for frying elk steaks. I do the steaks and my wife does 90% of the crock pot stuff. The steaks are fried or grilled. It is kept simple. I like the Alpine Touch seasoning I won one time for the photo of the month sensation I showed for your viewing pleasure. Which reminds me, I better get into a new contest as I am running low on Alpine Touch.

I have a 12 inch skillet,a smaller oval one, a grill about 18" long, 12" dutch oven and a 8 inch dutch oven, Another 10 " aluminum dutch oven that is for oven use (no feet). For the more sloppy stuff, I use the parchment paper liners that Bass Pro/Cabelas sell for in camp. They are great for cobblers etc.Nothing like a warm berry cobbler with sweet cream on it

I have two 12" that I inherited and use in the kitchen regularly. We also have a good size Dutch oven that gets used mainly in camp. I do the love the versatility of those pans. I use them in the oven as much as on the stove top.

I have a 14 inch Lodge that is used for meat.

As a kid growing up the Kitchen cast iron pan went to deer camp. Then stayed in the house till spring , Then was at the lake till deer season. When My dad passed my brother claimed the pan.

I dont mind cooking in cast iron, or Dutch ovens , I' seldom have the time needed for Dutch oven cooking.

Years ago my buddy Dave and I took the boy scouts on a popular campout. We opened the trailer doors and someone had added a bunch of cast iron Skillets some big skillets too . The neighboring troop had the doors open on their trailer. Dave just added the skillets and Dutch ovens to their beautiful, perfectly organized camp trailer
