goat packers?

Postby Billy Goat » 12 07, 2021 •  [Post 1]

does (or have you) used goats to pack?

I've got 6 at present, but they havent been to the mountains yet. still too young.

I've got
1 - 3 year old nubian (very skinny - not sure if he has weight bearing capacity)
2-2 year olds
1- 1.5 year old
2 - 1 year old

I hope to take the oldest 3 or 4 to Colorado next year.

anyone?

attached is an older picture of most of them for discussion purposes...

and just for giggles, here's a pic of Eb and Haney (named after Green Acres characters) packing a whitetail spike back to camp with me last year.

as you'll see, the lazy fat guy is only carrying a revolver. :)

I have not. I have often thought it would be great, and a few guys I know of that use them day they enjoy having them. I just don't have the space or time at this point to raise them and I feel like you need to be around them all the time if you are going to do this kind of stuff with them. 4 mature goats could haul a good amount of meat for you in the mountains.
I hunt therefore I am. I fish therefore I lie.

Neighbor bought a bunch (herd, flock gaggle " ) for packing. I have no patience or love for goats

Those things have him on the verge of using all sorts of cuss words .
For a while he wanted me to go in and by lamas,, I would consider them, until this fall packing out our only archery elk,,

That pack went fairly good without extra help.

In October I pulled a fellow out of the ditch with lamas South of Dillion a ways. He offered me a free pack,, Then told him we were in Idaho,

they require a decent bit of maintenance, but it's fun (for me and the wife, at least). I go see them several times daily, and we take them for walks around the neighborhood a couple times a week.

long term, I'd like to use them to pack camp in a couple miles. I'm told that 6 goats can pack out an entire elk (boned out) minus a head.

havent done either yet, but I'm hoping that 2022 is their first elk camp year.

I know, but when a goat packer goes home, he always has plenty to eat rather than to just feed. It does not matter if he has any game or not. No one wants to chew on a couple of old mules.

If you had at least one nanny in your string you could have fresh milk every morning for your oatmeal. :P

I have had some experience with goats but not packing them. Keeping a billy around to breed the nannys keeps them fresh ,but that billy is the stinkiest thing I ever ran across on a farm

yep. bucks (with nuts) are very stinky.

our wethers probably smell better than I do by the end of an elk hunt. :)
