What now!

Postby Lefty » 12 03, 2021 •  [Post 1]

I have the goose pit, but no geese in the neighborhood!
I was thinking of setting some coyote traps, but now that Idaho CWD hunt has been offered.
The big trout are biting

I see that someone(s) opened a new wolf season in Oregon. They have poisoned a whole flock of eight of them over near La Grande. I would not want to be the culprits, especially if they get caught.

I was at a gas station in Montana, A rancher was rounding up "Volunteers" to go after a wolf.

We got 3 wild roosters this morning in a couple of hours. Tough walking in cattails and willows. But fun to hunt in 3 inches of fresh snow!

Heading out Weds at 5AM with the dog to chase some roosters. Work has been insane so I am trading 2 long Saturdays working for 1 Weds. hunting.
Like they say being self employed must be great taking days off whenever and leaving work early. Yeah, right.
But I AM lucky.

Well, I am a terrible wing shooter. Piper did her job and made some beautiful points. Many were hens so no shot there but it was always great seeing her lock on. We did get into some roosters too it just took a lot of walking to find them. I winged one and did not recover it. Pretty bummed about that. Its on me that my dog has not been trained to hunt down a cripple. I have trained a bunch and I just didn't do it with her yet.

Nice sunset though...

I started gearing up for a pine martin trapline, if this storm misses us that is the plan
Snow and no geese, maybe ice fishing.

And if the geese show up,,, the geese are in trouble

Flintlock season for whitetail, usually set for fisher and bobcat, maybe a little yote hunting, end the official season with our winter squirrel hunt followed by dinner and a few frosted barley pops.

Im still hung up on hunting geese,, which mostly dont exist anymore in my part of the state

The whole trapping thing my brother says wer're-"use to-bes" My friend commented on its a lot more fun running with someone else who has a line out.

Maybe not too late this year,, but I did have plans to put out a few martin boxes but got stomped on by snow and couldn't get up the mountian

Yeah, I trap now for specific animals, the days of a long line is gone for me, usually only about 2-3 dozen sets.

I could never drive the miles we use too, much less set a fraction of the traps.
I purchase a license every year. but don't make many sets. This year I only got two fox sets out. Empty the first night , 2nd night their was a snow drift over them.
I might run a short beaver line for kicks this spring or run to South Dakota to trap rats and maybe film for aa buddy, if there is someone to sell carcass rats to.
