Choose the two choices that best describe why you chose your elk round.

It's what my Dad used, but since then I've maintained it because the caliber performs well, has killed the heck out everything I've shot with it, I know and have everything I need to load it. No reason to change.
I hunt therefore I am. I fish therefore I lie.

If its what your dad used put that in the survey. There is no judgement that some of us use cartridges passed down to us, especially when they are good performers.

Let's see a 30 caliber can be 30-30, 30-06, .308, 300WinMag, 300WSM, 300 Weatherby and several others. Won't even get into 6.5 caliber. Correct terminology is cartridge or chambering.

.308, cuz all those Army snipers can’t be wrong. I haven’t owned a rifle in 30? years until 5-6? years ago. Have obviously been primarily a stick n string guy for a long time. First rifle I grabbed when i started buying them again was a Weatherby .308; see my opening statement ;). Grandpa J shot a lot of critters with his old .308. My pop was big on the .300 WM. Problem is, I target practice on Ft Lewis and they don’t allow magnums, silly I know. Ok, after I bought that .308, I got the fever. Next was a Browning A Bolt .243, it’s a deer slayer. Next, a Savage UL .223, fun gun to shoot. Next, a HMR .17, really fun to shoot and a tack driver. Last purchase was a Traditions smoke pole, which will get its walk in the woods in the WA late elk season.

My 1960-ish .308 Savage 99F tack driver. Same reasons for cartridge choice-proven since forever by super marksmen, ammo on shelves even in small towns in case you forgot your premium loads, short action, etc etc etc

When I found this 99 it had a split stock repaired with drywall screws and electrical tape. You'd think glue had not been invented yet based on the repair. Anyway, I corrected the botched repair and shaped a recoil pad to fit the stock so it can be returned to the original steel butt plate (I saved it). I need the extra pull to fit my long arms.
I encourage anyone losing love for their older long guns to ditch the scope and try aperture sights. It will bring the joy back I tell ya.

Big game ( Minnesota whitetails) in our house was 4 .308's and an older 30-30.
My dad loved those Remington 220gn. core-loc.
I thought all centerfires were suppose to hurt.

For me accuracy and performance is critical. I want game to go straight to the ground, but often doesn't.

I do not think any of the given reasons fit me very well. I prefer a 308W if I rifle hunt. No research has gone into that preference. I don't care if anyone else wants one. It shoots well and does not kick excessively. If you hit where you intend to, it is plenty adequate out for at least a couple of hundred yards. I don't care for a big magnum. The 308W just fits well.

Hard to answer with just one choice, But if I could have three choices, they would be (1) research (2) power and (3) long range performance.

All guns may shoot better with different loads. My 7mm Rem Mag just happens to like 175 gr Federal ammo. Yours may differ!
