Well, that was embarrassing

Postby wawhitey » 08 11, 2021 •  [Post 1]

Despite being a nearly perfect person in every way, i occasionally pull a stupid move while hunting. Yesterday i really outdid myself. Still cant believe it. I had a very nice blonde bear at 5 yards, broadside, unaware that i was standing right next to it. I pulled the trigger and instead of a boom flop, i got a loud "KLANG" noise. Now in the normal course of things i think id realize that wasnt a misfire. But when the expected loud boom didnt happen and the bear turned its head to look at me, my brain just kinda failed. I thought it was a misfire. Well the bear just stood there staring at me, everybit as stupified as i was, and continued staring at me from 5 yards while i worked the lever to chamber a new round, pulled the trigger again and KLANG! still not getting it, i cycled the action again, ejecting anther perfectly good cartridge, when the bear ran offand i realized that the loud klang was the hammer hitting the hammer block safety. I forgot to disengage the safety. The hunting gods served up a very nice bear on a silver platter and i still screwed it up. Still kicking myself.

Serves you right for using one of those abominable lever actions! That ought to teach you to shoot something classy, like a bolt action or a pump.

Well hell's bells. That is no fun at all. Back at the bear den, over a couple of cold ones, Frank was telling the story to a few other bears "yep, I saw right off that he had the hammer safety on so I messed with him for a minute.. If I would have been on my game, I shoulda bluff charged him to see how many shells he was gonna try to get to work :D ".

Today i was hoping for redemption, headed up the mtn at daybreak and the wind started howling hard and erratically, every which way. My smell was going everywhere. So i backed out, sat at camp until 1pm, still howling winds. Decided i may as well head home to take a shower and wash my clothes. Had wolves howling very close by my camp right at noon. I was throwing some coyote challenge howls out to mess with them, but they werent falling for it. Probably the swirling winds had something to do with that.

These things happen. We don't think about or prepare for it. I dry fired my bow once when target practicing. It was too routine.

Actually my .308 savage bolt gun with a 1-8×30 scope would be ideal for the way i hunt bears. 1x for 99% of my bear hunting needs, could crank up to 8 if i wanted to reach out. But funny thing, ive never hunted bears with a bolt action. Ive killed all of my bears with lever guns, except one that was with a revolver. It just feels right to me. All of my bears have been taken at less than 50 yards, with the exception of one 7 years ago that i killed at 350 yards... with a 1956 lever action winchester.

Really, this is the perfect bear gun. As long as you remember to disengage the safety.

The peep sight flew out but there was no damage. I had the peep on a tether back then. Within 10 minutes I was back shooting.

redemption wasn't far off!

the whole "safety-cursing-seminar" was just a ploy to keep hunting.

congrats! also, I'm curious what the details are on that lever rifle. Looks like a pretty awesome short range setup. those cartridges on the stock say you did not fail to "use enough gun". :)

Its a .444 marlin. Its the dark series model that came out a couple years ago. I swapped out the stupud black painted stock with a laminate, and had theblack parkerized coating stripped and had it cerakoted combat grey and armor black. Custom self timing brake from a local guy here, sig sauer red dot. Awesome close range gun.

After a hunter has done it once the urge is gone. Sorry.
I have seen a lot of bears over the years within shooting distance, but have never even drawn my bow on one. I have a bear tag again this year. Who knows? Maybe I will finally get the urge to shoot one.
