This is a favorite of mine. Just neat lighting going on. Looks better in full resolution.

Checked the trail cams
In 30 days we had a single cow elk, and one day two cows on the trail cam. almost no elk action.
Last year was the first year I ever saw white tails in this area.
This year
two 8 pointers
two 6 pointers
1 forky, one spike
A pair of twins and we dont know how many other does, and one mule deer doe.
I was expecting Swede to help us out on tree stand hunting elk in this location, but I think Andrew is ready to jump ship and deer hunt  So white tail shooters How high up in this tight canyon flat( old beaver flow)
Im not too worried the bulls are just up the hills and aren't walking around in the antler-bruising thickets.
What was so impressive this place was solid deer traffic all hours of the day, just incredible

And wow multiple daily messing with the cameras strap, lots of noses ears and antlers

I am heading up the mountain on Thursday for scouting trip #1 of 2022. I spent some time today inventorying the trailcam system. I am bringing up 5 cams, 40 batteries, and 5 SD cards. The plan is to set up a "line" from South to North of a couple of miles. That way I can be efficient and run the same line each time. I will probably check the cards and change the batteries twice in July and twice in August. I will post pictures throughout. Can't wait to see others!

Yep, I saw that also. Their rationale: "One of the main reasons for the banning of trail cameras is because they violate the Fair Chase Doctrine, which "pays respect to the traditions of hunting and angling by emphasizing the development of an individual’s skills rather than reliance on practices or technologies that overwhelm the quarry’s ability to elude detection or take," according to the Arizona Game and Fish Department website." :? Then I guess they need to get rid of spotting scopes, range finders, and long range rifles too.

I can see the rationale in cell cams being illegal, but not regular cameras. Hell, most of mine go 6 months, sometimes over a year before i check them. All it tells me is that an animal was there several months back. And if i hang a camera somewhere, its becquse i already know there will be animals there. Thats why i put it there

Pulled my cameras today. The cell died in March, last pic was a pine martin.
I had thousands of pictures of crows and two little bears. Evidently the one camera, the batteries were dead,, so they sat for 3 weeks and never got a pic other than me setting the camera up.

I do not see a tail. Likely a Chupacabra or as a wild guess, a deer.

At first I thought it was a photo shopped hippo.

Only one pic,,, could very well be long tail

Oh boy. Dont know how i didnt notice these pics before, but the yote was also there just 30 minutes before the pup. The litter of coydogs is beginnibg to look like a distinct possibility (probability?) now.

Posted 3 cams, one video mode, 2 pic mode, along a mile of trail thats an old usfs rd thats undriveable due to blowdowns and scrub alder on both ends. Been that way for several years at least. Its essentially a big game trail now. The north and south cams both got hit by bears, flipped to point at the sun. The middle cam, got this guy before all the tree limbs drooped down in front of it. Aside from this one potentially good buck, got about a million bears, buncha yotes, several bobs, one big ol tom lion, and 2 wolves on cam. Plus some random whitetail, muley, moose action. Mostly predator fest. Some video some still pics. I think this buck has some potential.

The neighbor pup has discovered that the woods behind my house are a treasure trove of old animal bones. Gathered up all i could and covered them with a tarp until the grounds soft enough to dig a hole. But im sure theres still a bunch scattered about that i couldnt find.

I'm not sure those are tags on that bear. It might just be gauges or earspools like all the kids are wearing these days?

My next job just got delayed by a few days. Stay of execution. So saturday im heading up to an incredible looking spot i just found. Set a camera or three. Drag the old man out with me. He really wants a big muley buck before he throws in the towel, and if there was ever a place in ne wa, this is it. Looks perfect. So head up there, showw my dad what i found, explore a possible animal packout route, hang a couple cams. Dont expect ill get to check the cams until may at the earliest, but hopefully ill have some great pics to post here when the time comes

Red fox every night but no pic? What a jerk. That's one of my favorite little critters. Right up there with camp robbers, chipmunks, and raccoons.

I had so many fox pics. I think it was a female most of the time, then it was a single youngster. This camera is older, and a bit slow, so I had lots of tail and butt shots.
I did have some cool pics, the current bush in the foreground I think the fox was eating berries off pg it, those were some decent broadside pics pictures. Never got a fox picture in the daylight.

My trophy pic this check was the marmot!!, not even the bull elk.

Big male from the stranger pack (ive got a million pics of them, certain now minimum count is 10 including the 3 new pups) multitasking, carrying a chunk of carcass, and a stick, while marking his territory. But hes a high performance wolf. I wont get into details but hes got a hell of a back story. Wolf version of a navy seal

Heres the only pic i have that shows all 4 of them in one frame. Got a few good videos of the whole herd in daylight, mama lion was standing up on her hind legs to chew on my video mode camera thats at eye level on the tree, flipping it sideways, while the cubs played grabass in the background. First time ive ever had a cat mess with a camera. 99% of the time a bear is the culprit, occasionally an elk.

This is a real crappy bobcat pic, but it got me excited. Its about 100 yards from my house, heading my direction. Had to kill the tunes and lights and hang a rifle with a green light on it from my living room window pointed into the timber. Sat and watched for an hour hoping hed step into the light but no such luck.

I gotta put out my cams.
We went for a hike the other day and found 6 cams. None had any security. I left a note complimenting the cams and mentioned if I had been the type they would now belong to me.

More lion fambly pics expected this summer. Hunting the state land across the road today. I was .88 miles northeast of my house in a thick creek bottom and came upon a very strange mess of lion tracks (couple days old) which, with my mediocre tracking skills, i determined to be a female and an exceptionally large tom. Likely the big hoss that comes through and shreds the log on my trail occasionally. Looking at the weird mess of tracks i got a hunch i was looking at their mating site. Either way, it was 2 cats, one a big boy, playing grabass right there. So quite likely ill have a new neighborhood litter in about 3 months. Probably get pics of the female and the new cubs this spring or early summer.

Very cool finding those tracks. I came across a fresh lion kill one time. Small deer. The lion had buried the leftovers (not much left worth bothering with) like a domestic family cat using a litter box. Made things nice and neat before taking off.
A mountain lion had killed a three year old boy nearby that spot a bunch of years prior. They say it was a cat anyway. Didn't find the remains until 3 or 4+yrs later. Sad story because it was totally preventable. The kid ran back and forth between two groups and ahead of his group. Nobody was really keeping track of him. Not good.
When we hiked with our kids we always insisted stay in eyeshot and never round a corner out of sight and that rule was enforced just for possible lions.

Last night, laying around in front of this camera. As soon as the cam sent me a pic of them moving my way, i had the lights off and window open, waited a minute qnd shined a green spotlight into the trees. Saw glowing eyes coming at me, saw mama lion weave through the trees at about 50 yards and walk off to the right, into thicker stuff where i couldnt see. Then heard her call to the cubs, and a cub answer back a couple times. Pretty cool.

A little unnerving having them seemingly so comfy so close to your house. They look well fed.

Not unnerving to me, aside from two sketchy situations at my place. As a general rule they want nothing to do with people. My neighbor very much doesnt like them and a couple times was clearly unhappy that i didnt kill cats in my yard when i could have. She would be happier if i shot every one i see, open season or not. But like ive told her, they were here before she was. Shes had a couple sketchy encounters at her place too. Both of which i believe i talked about on this forum. One was, admittedly, a situation where she should have shot the cat, but a 65 yr old woman living by herself, uncomfortable and not proficient with her guns, i dont blame her for not opening her door and blasting a cat thats laying next to her window staring at her. Then the other occasion for her wasnt cats being fearless around humans, it was a fluke where her dog treed a grown cub, long story short i ran, and i mean full sprint, right past mama lion with my .357 in hand, after her dog treed that "cub" (adult sized) into a big tree in spitting distance of her house. Mama lion let me run past her and grab the dog and throw her in the house, and after that i didnt see mama lion. But as soon as i got home my neighbor called and told me the youngster came out of the tree and ran through her back yard toward my place, where his mom was.

And yes, i agree, they look very well fed. I figure mom and 3 cubs that are nearly full grown, must be eating, conservatively, 2 deer per week, in addition to whatever bunnies etc theyre scooping up. I bet the 4 of them will eat a whitetail doe in 1 sitting if theyre hungry. This is one of the cubs close up. What a damn chunker.

Soi finally managed (i suck at internetting) to upload a video of the whole herd, pride, whatever. Cub #3 lags behind a bit. Looks to me like cubs 1 & 2 are nearly mama sized, where cub 3 is a little smaller. So id guess 2 male cubs, 1 female, but im no biologist. https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/788466215

Theyre from other cams. I have 3 cameras on that tree. Sounds ridiculous, but ill explain my ocd.
The stealthcam is video mode only. It can use a huge sd card and has very good battery life, so its a dedicated video cam. But, it glitches out sometimes, and misses stuff, so i dont trust it. Therefore i have an old reliable bushnell on the same tree, taking still pics.
Then i got these new browning cell cams, and wanted one right there, so i put one up, but, not knowing how well it would work, i left the bushnell as insurance. So the flashes are the browning and the bushnell snapping pics as the stealthcam records video.
After 9 months its clear the browning cell cam never misses a beat, and theres no need to have the bushnell there anymore. Ill take that down to use elsewhere next time i go back there.

Cats roam far and wide, i have no illusions of being able to pester any specific one. However, the 240 acre chunk next door just got sold to a local timber company, vaagen. They are not exactly known for allowing public access, but some old family friends, ive known my whole life, their cousin i met when we were teenagers, she is now a vaagen by marraige. So im looking into getting access to my neighboring property that way. Hope it works out, would be great to go predator hunting without crossing a road, but im not holding my breath.

Just checked a few cameras in a new area ive been poking around in. Nothing giant, but several nice 4x4 mules and 5x5 whitetails that i wouldnt think twice about pulling the trigger on. But i really like the looks of this guy. Lotta weird sticker points up top on both sides.

Twice this guy bedded down in front of this camera. Once for 15 hours, once for 11.5 hours. To the tune of i dont know. 1000 or so pictures. And did he have the common decency to drop his paddles there? No, he did not.

I hung this camera on a pretty much stripped moose carcass april 2022, figured it was a wolf kill. Wasnt much left on it but they kept coming around chewing on it for a few months. Just finally went back and got the camera today. Tons of pics of them gnawing old nasty skin off the bones. Plus a ton of yote pics and about a million bears.

25 lbs of Cereals and bread, 170 lbs of meat scrap,,, all gone except 3 lb of honey mustard bar pretzels. 5 nights and the trail cam had died,,, Sono pics.

I put out 450 lbs of fresh meat trim and 50 lbs of dried fruits, peanuts, coconut flour scramble fruity cereals, 5 nights it was all gone,,,all Ive never had bears hit bait that hard when first set out,,, ,, sadly the only piles of bear poo that I found were small

I bought a 4 pac of stealth cam prowlers and set them yesterday,,,

I think Ill make some sugar rice
and coat some cheap dog food with syrup and coconut flour

How much time should a Cheap Bushenell, amd stealth cam) camera spend in the woods before they die!

Phone just chirped at me a few minutes ago, bear heading roughly my direction. Few minutes later, my driveway cam chirps at me, its the bear again. Pretty dark out there, only saw a shadow, but i opened my window and hollered at it, and i saw the dark form run off crashing through the brush, and sounded like a second critter crashing through the brush off to the right. Mustve been a sow with a cub, or a boar was following her.

Right as i hit submit, my driveway cam chirped again. Unreal. Guess i didnt spook them enough last time. This time i lit him up with my green spotlight, and he stood up and looked at me for a minute, told him to get lost and he pretty casually trotted across my field toward the creek bottom. Also, this time there was a strong smell of skunk that wasnt there before. Wonder if its related.

The last couple evenings, the cell cam behind my house has been bombarded with pics from 5 fledgeling owls. Assuming theyre just testing out their wings, exploring a bit, while the parents are out hunting. 26 pics of them yesterday, blowing up my phone. But thats okay, i like owls. Better than dozens of pics of a snowshoe hare running back and forth. I think these are barred owls, not great horned. Anybody that knows their birds have any insight to that?

Went to check a cam i hung at a waterhole i found on the state land across the road. Set it up late april, first dink bear that came along mid may flipped it.
Tomorrow im heading to ferry county to check a few cams i hung last august. Hopefully the bears left them alone.

Bears,,, doesn't matter what you do they will mess them up.

I had one beer every time he left the bait site The trail cam that was about six and a half feet up in the air pointing down at the bait He would walk by stand up on his hind feet and smack it with his right paw.

Today was a disappointment. Checked camera 1, nothing great on cam. Several averageish 5x5 whitetail, couple bull moose, bears, yotes, a wolf. Was hoping for some big mule bucks on that cam but no luck. Headed up to the cam i really am optimistic about, and the road is blocked buy a bunch of loggers. Crap. Decided i didnt want to drive over the kettle crest to check cam 3, so went up to put salt at a cam that had a lot of nice bucks last fall, and there were damn moocows all over up there. I may decide to do some bear hunting in that area in a couple weeks, so i decided i better not put the salt out. It would just keep the cows up on that mountain. I hate dealing with cows when im bear hunting. After i get done with my bear hunt this year ill go put more salt at that camera, see what shows up this fall

About 9am today in my back yard, just as i was leaving the barber shop. No time stamp, because early this morning i noticed the batteries on the cam were low so i changed to factory settings. Could give a long winded explanation for that but dont see the need.

Our noon news had a short blub the 3rd time this week a cat was spotted traveling along a canal in Rigby.

No idea if its a regular. Theres only been 1 "regular" here that was recognizable and around a lot. After a few years she showed up with a tracking collar. So i started talking to a wdfw bio and sharing pics and he gave me a lot of info on her. She brought several litters of cubs through my place over the years. She was 8 or 9 a few years ago according to the bio. She stopped coming around a year or so ago, must have died, she was pretty old. I emailed the bio asking about that, curious what her ending was, and he never responded. Kinda bums me out, as much as were overpopulated with them. That old girl had been hanging around my place as long as ive lived here, denning in the neighborhood, giving me lots of pics and a few first hand sightings, and despite her obvious comfort being close to my house and the neighbor houses, she never caused a problem. No pets or livestock killed or anything. I grew kinda fond of her over time.

I have only 1 doe here this year that has 2 fawns. They look like theyre running from something in this pic, but im guessing theyre just zooming around for the hell of it as fawns are inclined to do. So far theyre both still alive. They were in my yard this afternoon.

Just set this cam last august, checked today. This buck here could motivate me to dust my bow off and hang some treestands. When i get done bear hunting ill head back up there and put out some salt and a couple more cams. See if hes still around. Probably just in preparation for possibly hunting him in 2024. And sometime between oct 28th and oct 31st he got his left g3 busted off, so theres gotta be another big boy around there somewhere.

Pretty sure hes the same buck from a few posts up, but he lost the little g5 and split g3 on his left side, now a clean 5x5. As soon as the loggers are out of there im going to hang more cams down lower, where i suspect ill find him during late archery. If my hunch is correct, i plan on hunting him november 2024, if he manages to dodge the lions and wolves that long. Big, big woods though. Miles of national forest in every direction. So if im wrong on my guess of where hes going in november, guess im out of luck. And i could very well be wrong in my guess. Never know just what these muntain whitetail will do. All i know is, last year he disappeared after halloween, ( late arch starts nov 10th there) along with all the other whitetail. But it was a real early, heavy snow last year, so the next couple years could be different insofar as when he moves down. That cam is closer to 5k than 4k.

From a cam check at home today. About 50 or 60 yards from my house. Really dont think the bear was chasing the deer, but the deer was definitely running from the bear.

Hung a cougar crossing sign up a few days ago, on the trail the lions always use. Figure id warn the deer. They dont seem to be taking it seriously. I tried my best. If they get eaten, they cant blame me. I warned them.

Whitey,
Hilarious. Better send them back to 2nd grade. Love your trail cam pics, so much diversity. We have whitetails, sandhill cranes, an occasional pheasant and our first black bear ever this year. 98% of our pics are whitetail and many of these are does. Boring by your standards! Oh, once or twice a year we get coyotes or fox.

Why wouldn't you hunt that buck this year? Tag issue?

I've always wondered how the deer know to cross in the deer crossing zones on the highway?

Whether it is a human or a cougar, I think venison sounds delicious! Great pics Whitey!!

Unreal. I was in the dentists chair getting my teeth cleaned today when my phone chirped this at me. I swear the yotes and lions know when im gone, when ill be home, and taunt me. Like 3 trips in a row, lions right outside within a few hours after leaving and a few hours before returning. Only the bears dont seem to care, they seem to know ill just yell at them. Im like rodney dangerfield, i get no respect. Maybe i should invite a few bears inside, let them see all the rugs and skulls and stuff, let them know who theyre effing with

Last fall was the first time i had a cam there, and he disappeared before the nov 10th opener, along with every other whitetail, due to. An early hard winter, and that being a high elevation. I need to creep on this buck more before hunting him, figure out wher hell go when winter sets in, but logging activity in the area is interrupting that possibility. I need to know more about the buck before i commit to spending 30-40 days in a treestand freezing my balls off. Also, i wont be getting home until right about the beginning of late archery this year, and have no stands set, and wouldnt want to go right from sitting on my butt driving a boat all day, to sitting on my butt in a treestand all day. When i get off a long trip, im craving some time stretching my legs in the mountains. Treestand stuff sounds miserable. Ill likely not buy a deer or elk tag this year, just go straight into lion hunting. Maybe hit idaho a bit to chase wolves.

Post 129 i talked about a cam i set up on a water hole on the dnr land near my house. Few days ago i was coming from town, heading home, and just about ran over a wolf heading that way. Ive never been disappointed in my trucks performance until then. Guess its time to get a supercharger. Swear, i floored the gas pedal
Either way, heres the east end of that westbound wolf, about a mile west of the road where i almost pancaked the sucker.

That camera, 3 times this year bears have flipped it over, leaving it facing almost the exact same way every time. Might have to just take a bear box up there and secure it against any future shenanigans. Just so many bears up there. More bear turds than you can shake a stick at, its crazy

Set this cam august 30th last year. Pulled it today. In mid november a huge snow storm hit, cam glitched out, date got screwed up, so dates are about 5 months off. But look at the size of these cubs compared to the bull.

Yesterday evening i walked in my house and a couple minutes later saw on my phone a notification that my driveway camera had pictures, so i ignored it, thinking it was just pictures of me. Sept 1st, opening day of bobcat season.

Another backyard cat this morning.

And wednesday i was up watching a good cut for deer. An hour before dark a cougar showed up and proceeded to screech its head off 75 yards away from me. Dont think that was very helpful.

Cougs sure seem to be selling cheap lately.

such a big one,,,,

My wife thinks its weird to set out bait stations for coyotes.
The lions just don't show up enough here.

I have three Minnesota friends who set up their backyards/ property for trail cam Pics.

Tim mentioned on Saturday he got a picture of a fisher at his place, just on the edge of the Minneapolis metro area. and has had bears for the past few years... Bears and fisher didnt exist in that region 20 years ago.

I bought a bucnh of Canad goose shells this week, planning on making a trophy picture of geese in our 1.5 acre pasture  I want to shoot a goose from the inside of my barn!!! hopefully pictures to come in a month!! 8-)

Pretty sure ive got this guys number. And he seems to not be getting any bigger. As much as i hate to give wdfw the money i plan on buying a multi season deer tag next year and getting some stands up, go seriously hunt this buck. Decent mature bucks are getting real hard to come by lately, population has crashed. Last pic of him was nov15 mid day on a different cam. Hung this one right in his bedroom in august, just checked it today.

Cam check today. Usually have the first week of sept off work, so going to hang a couple stands here next summer, hope to hunt it that first week of early archery. Interesting buck here, funky point coming off his right main beam.

I may have posted the pic on archertalk.

Did have a goat here once, but it was already dead. My taxidermists dog killed one of his goats, and he gave me the carcass. Put it in my back yard, went to bed a couple hours later, woke up in the morning, goats gone. Cougar dragged it off that night. Heres another nice cougar pic from my property this fall.

Very pretty bob on my property while i was in alaska. Bold crisp jaguar-like markings, rare around here. Apparently referred to as a "rosette" in the fur market, and a high dollar pelt. Didnt buy a trapping license this year, but i might next year. Leave it for seed for the time being.
