Show Em Off Here!

Postby Trumkin the Dwarf » 05 14, 2021 •  [Post 1]

I love a good shoulder mount, and I love an excuse to brag about the one and only big bull I shot. I'll bet the rest of you elk nuts do too. So lets see them, fellas. Consider this your chance to straight up brag about the big one that didn't get away! No need to sneak photos of big Hank into your coworkers conversations today. Lets embrace it for what it is, and show off a little bit! Allow me to present to you Earl, my first ever bull elk.

That's a dandy. That's what drifts through my dreams as elk season approaches. I had an opportunity last year, two actually, at bulls of that caliber. I blew one and opted for the easy shot on a spike vs. the likelihood of no shot on the big bull.

I've killed one good bull, I killed him in 2017 on a rifle rut hunt in WA. It was the first bull I'd ever called in. 20 minutes into the first morning of the hunt this guy came charging in and I couldn't stop myself. I'd like to have an opportunity to do that hunt again some day.

Found it a "small copy of a copy
Idaho
An old, old, stinky bull We had it processed . The shop said it was the biggest elk they had ever done ( physically)

The place is sort of our family playground, picking huckleberries, snowmoble , kids down hill skied right down the trail and through the trees

Didn’t take a lot of pics in the early days but had a camera/clip shot along for this one.

Great bull RJ! With a twig and stick none the less. Some day I'll join you on a hunt and let you call one in close for me :)

These are the two bucks that I have on my wall in the house. I enjoy looking upon these two and remembering the hunts.

I've written both up here, I'll link the stories. Interestingly, both bucks score exactly the same score, to the 1/8th, despite being very different racks. Both were very different hunts, and both very satisfying in their own ways.

Here is one, about 1965. My first elk, NE of Questa NM in the Latir Lakes region, .308, 180 gr Remington Bronze point, about 350 yards. Three of us took three bulls in the first 15 minutes of the season. Crappy picture, scanned from a print. In my original post, that set of antlers on the far right is that elk.

I like Swede's picture. But I think his Danner boots would go great with those bell bottoms. :D

Dang Lefty! That's a heck of a wall. No wonder you're so picky on when you shoot. Your wife is filling the freezer for you!

All hers: all shot before we were married.

she hunted with her dad and they gave all their deer away Idaho seasons were long and they hunted from a jeep and late season with a snow cat. They hunted in places others couldnt get too. and had some canyons that in deep snow the big bucks holed up in
When My father in law got married he said he was done eating game. As a kid his house they got chicken on Sunday and only game he killed or fish he caught the rest of the week,..

She hasnt shot a big game animal since we got married, Kind of upsetting; she has a life time Idaho license. and this year she even commented she didn't need to put in for any draws.
We did hunt a few times in Wyoming with our daughters and a depredation hunt , she insisted on making the gutting into a science class for our daughters. She will come up to camp, She has helped set bear bait. But no longer enjoys early AM hunts or the cold :(

It was a whole lot something ( embarrassing , humbling insulted ?). She loves tossing it in my face that I bring home deer " we never would have shot" And does were never shot
I have messed up: When we first moved to Washington a nice little 5x7 I passed on over and over,.. If I would have killed it my hunt would have been over. The next Saturday I saw the Klickatat buck that changed my life.
