Do You Use A Meat Pole?

Postby Swede » 10 13, 2020 •  [Post 1]

I have not set up a meat pole in about a hundred years. OK; that may be a slight exaggeration. I had not even used one until I hunted with RJ in Idaho. This year I packed out my elk and hung up my meat sacks overnight again. I again used an old meat pole because it made my brother feel better. Who uses these things, and who sets them up? Are you hanging up a meat pole in anticipation, or for game you have in camp?

Our plan is will hang in camp until the last meat is out of the woods. then we head home to cut it up or have it cut

There has been a meat pole near where ever Ive hunted,
I put one up for my daughters moose years back but most of my game is two hours from camp to a cooler.

It depends on location and time of year. I do like to let my meat hang if at all possible. Air circulation around hanging meat is far superior to meat in coolers. Meat in coolers in a last resort for me. However, if it's to warm, or I don't have a way to keep the meat dry while hanging, it goes into coolers. We stay in an RV park/campground in Idaho, and they are good at serving hunters, but don't allow meat poles to be attached to their trees. We devised this portable unit that we just need to add a pole to, and it works like a charm. Throw a tarp over it if it's going to rain and everything stays nice and dry.

That deer you shot for the top picture sure had a lot of legs.

Due to his accuracy issues, it is unlikely he shot it. Most likely he "shot" it with his F150!.

Twelve legs and one deer tag may be a little difficult to explain to the game warden. I thought 7MM might try his excuse on us. Maybe the warden will except the F150 alibi. :D

I have noticed several Chevy owners have adopted the slogan, "I would rather push a Chevy than drive a Ford." Does anyone need an explanation why they came up with that saying?

Thats why I always drive up hill of camp to hunt. That way I can coast back down when it doesn't start.
