Elk calling; and calling geese.

Postby Lefty » 09 06, 2020 •  [Post 1]

The last Elknuts Webinar and a when and how the last two podcasts Ive listened to; The generalizations finally hit me,.. or made more sense.
I need to admit I do not understand the elk language as well as I need to. But like I teach many goose hunters. Mastering the making and use of a few a few sounds makes a huge difference. The understanding of those sounds, and the emotion attached.
Listening to one podcast, in my minds eye as Paul explained emotion( again, and again a big duh moment to me) but this time it struck me in the face. Calling bulls is just like calling geese. The right sound with the correct emotion is huge,..

   Well sorta, calling elk is harder :D

I agree that calling elk is hard. I'm not practiced in goose calling, but I've still turned a few flocks my way. Decoy setup has been my bugaboo.

I can call elk, but not geese very well. emotion has a lot to do with it. reading theirs and communicating yours. and by yours I dont mean that you communicate to the elk that you want to stick an arrow through them and bring them home to dinner. Not that emotion.

Dwarf
Do not over think decoy set ups
To many do; for all the wrong reasons
If there is wind. Life is easy; s simple V or U
Then it’s a matter of how many hunters and how many decoys, ok field layout and a dozen other things CAN come into play
If your headed this way this winter I can give you all sorts of suggestions
But most of the goose hunters overthink set up
My life has gotten easier with fewer decoys
We use to runn stupid big spreads but that seldom was the convincing factor

Rig Geese are somewhat simular noisy flocks I try to match them
Going away flocks a bit more emotion

Elk well I’m still working on it in 2 hours I hope to see if that bull track matches his head gear

Last place for reception for a while
