Odd, Absurd, or Crazy

Postby Swede » 10 07, 2019 •  [Post 1]

Many of us are straggling back from our hunts. So what happened during your scouting or hunting that was at least odd?

I found an outdoor privy covered with plastic and brush. I suppose someone was concerned someone would steal it and take it home.
I also have a fellow tell me he was on ESPN with a hunting program. That was his lead in to inform me that most of the elk had left the area due to wolf predation. I never asked him for credentials or anything about elk or wolves. He just thought I should know, I guess. BTW: The elk numbers in the area seemed to be normal and I saw or heard no evidence of wolves.

I don’t see many people or hunters

We got stuck in a booming thunder and sleet storm all day had been perfect

We had always left one canyon alone a 78 year old fellow sits on water
One day 3 generations were packing out an elk
We aske which canyon they got the elk and we would go to the other
We found the carcass , why did he send us up the one the killed and had packed out of

Ran into a government looking Suburban, the fellow said most people run and hide when they see him; he was checking the cell tower by us
Knowing it was military I pushed it; I asked why I had 4 bars , then nothing
His answer was it was all with in constraints
He added mountains generally had poor reception

Then the fun one we were between or in a herd of 100 cows and 4 bulls for over 2 hours
The woods was noisy with all sorts of elk sounds

The newbie I had with me had 15 different dry cows over that evening under 30 yards hearing the bulls he decided he would wait for a bull
Those were his last shot opportunities on elk

I called a bull moose in that was not happy
The bull elk had to let him do his thing my daughter and he boyfriend had th leave, well the moose scared the out of the woods

I came across a wheel chair at least a mile from the trail head on a very narrow trail.Same area, a lot of sheep are grazed. The sheep herders are usually from Peru. One area of aspen trees had the most pornographic bark carvings I ever came across. From some of them those sheep must have looked pretty good to the sheep herders.

I ran into a well known, so called hunting expert, writer for several outdoor magazines. He was parked along side the road with his professional photographer. I thought maybe they were having car trouble so I stopped to offer assistance. Turns out they were doing a photo shoot for a magazine article. Later on that same day I ran onto them again at a national forest campground. There was a large boulder over by the horse corrals. This so called hunting expert was standing on top of the boulder and posing like a minute man with his rifle, trying to make it look like he was searching for elk. His photographer was kneeling on the ground below him, trying to get the proper angle for a picture. I couldn't control my laughter as I walked by!

You can sure tell the difference between genuine hunters like Larry Jones or Dwight Schuh, that are featured on television, video, books and magazines and these knot-heads that the first thing out of their mouth is "I have been on television". Larry and Dwight were never show-offs.
Anyone can get featured in a hunting story. It helps to be a fairly good story teller, and to have decent writing skills.

Maybe not real odd ,.. but no sheep were run through any of the national Forest we hunted
Way more cows were put in pastures for short intervals

A cattle rancher told me the feds didnt want sheep in the area because the feds didnt want to have to take out the wolves or grizzlies

We hunted one thicket, clos to the road Three different days and never saw another hunter,.. now thats odd
