Spring and summer plans

Postby Elkhunttoo » 02 16, 2026 •  [Post 1]

What are you all doing this spring and summer to pass the time until this fall. You know, that one day we dream of all year :D

Myself I signed up for a marathon that I will be running on May 2nd. Having no snow has helped me train this winter but definitely not going to help water crops this summer.

I will also be doing a lot of yard work and planting a garden as soon as it gets time

Been going to the gym and shed antler hunting. We still have snow and it is a major workout to put in 20,000 steps in snow. I am ahead of past years. Come decent weather, I will ride my bike. Last year did just over 500 miles. I want to do 600 this year.

Present day...I'm still adjusting to being final, final retired (as of the end of May 2025) and catching up on Mrs. Wapiti's honey-do projects ;). It's amazing what she can come up with at the drop of a hat when she thinks I'm being too idle. As spring arrives, I'll increasingly be working on property chores (fertilize lawn, trim the big row of Leland Cyprus that separate the front lawn from the private road we live on, trim some big branches on the pine trees, do maintenance on machines, mowers, quad, etc., rebuild a trellis, clean up and stain wrap around porch decking, rebuild a couple of lawn gates, etc...... ). Fun stuff? Try to "touch" WapitiTalk daily; prep boat and gear for some late spring/summer Kokanee fishing on local lakes; order and get a new string installed on my hunting bow; shore up my archery backstop... the frame is in need of repair and needs a new center for the Rhinehart target; prep classic cars for the summer car shows (will probably only be able to attend 5-6 this year); both hike with pack on trails and work out on treadmill to get back into mountain shape; shoot arrows; go through all hunt gear and pick up anything lacking; golf weekly as time permits; will prep boat/gear for late summer salmon fishing in the sound; may try to get over to the spud state mid-July for a scouting trip is time permits.

I've been a regular couch potato this winter. Gotta get out and moving. Been too cold to get out in the shop and build some more knives. But as soon as it warms up a bit I'll be out there grinding away. Lots of house repairs to do. Colorado winters are hard on a house. And I'll have to fire up the tractor and cut a larger fire break around the place. It's been so dry this winter that I fear the fires in the west are going to de terrible this year.

I’ve been logging about ten miles a week walking the dog plus cutting a pickup load of wood every other Saturday. Once the ice melts off the back roads I will incorporate some jogging and biking with the dog.

Last night I looked through the seed catalog and made final plans for 5 acres of food plots this year.

We are heading to Daytona for a week in March to hang out with my son and his girlfriend.

Spring turkey end of April then it’s full on planting plots and keeping the property mowed throughout the summer.

If I have any spare time I’m sure my wife can find something for me to do in her garden.

“That one day we all dream of” will have to wait a year as it the wife’s turn to pick and she wants to drive route 66 to California.

It will be whitetails only for me this year.

Been working out regularly since just before Christmas. Rucking with 30# pack 5 days a week before work. 4 miles. Do the hill by my house 3 times. 320' elevation gain in half a mile, up an down x3 and then loop back to the house. Doubling up with afternoon weight training 3-4 days a week. But dang if my knee isn't flaring up. Will get some camping trips in, and have two backpacking trips in the alpine of the Cascades planned for July before bear season opens in August.
I hunt therefore I am. I fish therefore I lie.

We docked in LA yesterday morning.
My snow goose hunting partners had been conversing while I was on the cruise with my wife.
Home from church and I had a few more messages.
Loading the truck and hitching the trailer, and Im on my way to Nebraska in sometime in the AM.

Boss man: First you will never be able to finish that Honey-do list.
And yes it took me some time to adjust to retirement,,, however-however get going on that list you had 30 years ago,, One sad thing is you will need to admit you cant be doing some things. I thought I would still play hockey, ski with our kids. Snowmobiling off my list.

My wife agrees: we are not white sand and beach people. But she also stated Minnesota Canada boundary waters ice fishing is out..

So Im going to sell off most of my traps, build some cage traps, head south foir a week or three and go chase kitties in Arizona and maybe New Mexico
