180° course change

Well i normally take august off for bear season, but this year i volunteered to do a job that was going to ruin that for me. Had just loaded up my truck this morning and was about to hit the road for alaska (opening day of bear is tomorrow) when i got a call that the job has been postponed until august 12th! Got all my work crap out of my truck, loaded up my hunting crap, and im headed out to the mountains first thing in the morning. Game on! I dont have a ton of time though, so i dont intend to be picky at all. First bear that steps in front of the 444 is going to be in trouble.

My gut tells me there will be 2 dead bears by the end of the work week.

So close, thought i had one in the bag. Had my rifle shouldered and safety off, listening to him breathing, for maybe 10 damn minutes. Moved down through the jungle steep draw. Never even saw him but he had to have passed by within 10 yards of me. Very very thick draw i was crossing when i heard him and froze. Nothing like the sound of a bear breathing extremely close to get me worked up. Im sitting for a while, them moving down toward where he went to do some calling. Want to let him move off a little so i dont spook him sneaking down there.

I just jumped one, maybe same one, tryin to sneak through bad brush. Very close but couldnt see in brush. Making a racket and popping his teeth at me. Know he didnt wind me so i tried a couple fawn bleats, heard nothing from him since. Think he stealthed out.

Not hunting today. Up at my parents helping out. Got back to my truck yesterday evening, decided to drive up the road about 2 miles to a better camp spot. About 200yards up the road a young bear ran out from the creek bottom. Another mile up the road a big ol hurkin brown one ran across the road in front of me. Heading back up this evening to camp out and get an early start tomorrow. Pretty pathetic berry crop this year, but maybe thatll make the bears particularly hungry ad susceptible to calling. Kinda disappointing though, i like stuffing my face with handfuls of big huckleberries while im bear hunting. Berries are small this year and few per bush.

Completely uneventful day. It happens. Found a moose spine and pelvis. Thought about looking around for a skull, but at that point it was just too hot to go crashin around through all that brush. Didnt seem important enough. Hopefully i get some excitement tomorrow. Been a while since ive stunk of dead bear. Kinda miss it.

Were having bear for Sunday Dinner,, I think I ate a pound last night tasting it for proper doneness

4.5 lbs of fatty upper rear ham
1/2 cup of water
tablespoon of soy sauce
heaping tablespoon of brown sugar
40 minutes in the pressure cooker.
Perfect for me with no added salt
