Memorial Day…let us never forget

What is this whole Memorial Day thing about? It’s far beyond a three day weekend and BBQ. It’s this…. watch it and be reminded.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aGvHUsZhS ... e=emb_logo

Copy that. All gave some, but some gave all. Don't forget.

Did you ever notice that the old veterans who were engaged in some of the fiercest battles ever, never wanted to talk about it? If I would ask, I got a one- or two-word answer. I assume they did not want to have to relive those events.
I had one uncle that had two purple hearts for service in Europe as a paratrooper in the 101st airborne division.
One uncle was on the destroyer Cassin Young in the Pacific that is now tied up next to the USS Constitution. He went through two typhons and his ship was in constant danger from the enemy for extended periods. The ship was hit by two kamikazes and survived.
I had a friend that was a Marine who was engaged in about every major battle from the time the Marines left Australia, for Guadalcanal until he made it on through the battle of Okinawa. He was at Iwo Jima but said for him the fighting near Bougainville was the worst. The only specific thing I heard him say was that one day he was running along a ridge when the Marine in from of him was killed with a bullet and the one behind was killed right afterward. He said he just kept on running to his destination. He was a very humble common man.
My dad and other uncles served in the Navy during WWII, but I know very little about what they did. Dad said something about pulling bodies out of the ocean after a ship exploded nearby. What he said about that experience still resonates with me. He mentioned how the white men and black men looked the same floating in the water. They were all white. They had all given their life in the defense of our nation.
Mom's brother James Broyhill lost his life when a German U boat torpedoed the gunship USS Plymouth off the coast of North Carolina. I was told the flash from the blast that hit in a powder magazine could be see 100 miles inland.
As I remember these men, I confess, except for dad I have no idea if they were Republicans or Democrats. It never mattered. Everyone volunteered to go into combat for their nation.
I too volunteered for the Navy but was never in combat. As a civilian I later served in the National Guard. You can be sure it irritates me that there are people today who behave like our Country is not worth defending and they are entitled above all others. Some are so arrogant they would even defy our Constitution and deny other American citizens the rights so many gave their life for.
God forgive us of our arrogance and ingratitude. Please forgive me when I snivel about some trivial matter that did not go my way.

My dad had a different take,, he was in Korea , he had a box full of metals and wouldn't talk about any of his service time. He spent his time on the front lines and most of his time in hospitals. I had only heard bits and pieces of what happened.
