Face Paint, Camo Face/Head Net, or Nothing

Whaddya you cats do to tone down the shine of your smiling face when elk hunting? I used face paint for years, then head nets, but for the past few years.... nothing.

I normally go with a beard haha only been hunting whitetails from a tree stand. Hunting elk on the ground will be a completely different ball game. I will have a head net in my pack I haven't decided if I will use it or not. Used camo paint a couple times it ends up getting on every from whipping my face.

Mathews, the head nets actually work really well and aren't that cumbersome. Put em on when you head out, then, roll em up from the front, over your forehead/head, to the back, and tuck it under your hat with a bit hanging out the back.. When you set up, or, get into something.... off comes the hat and you roll the net forward.

Beard for me as well, but on the odd occasion I do use face paint I go with Carbomask. Much easier cleanup than the other face paints out there.

Never thought about tucking the head net into the hat that is a great idea. I will definitely be giving it a try!

Nothing for me. I honestly don't think they help.

Like everything else "camouflage" that we do. Movement is what gets you busted.

i have a natural beard that i will be sporting along with my camp boonie hat and if i need it i have a net in my pack to help with any pesky bugs when im sitting at a location.

I have tried the camo face paint and I can not stand it. lol So I bounce back and forth between an elastic type facemask and nothing at all...I am not sure that it makes any difference either.

If you don't get caught moving - it's not going to matter. But, your face and hands are what stick out most if you do move. I use lightweight merino gloves with the fingers cut off for my hands, and am trying carbomask for my face this year.

I never wore anything but my beard for years. Then (it will happen to you!) my beard turned gray and then snow white. It sticks out like a mule deer's rump! So now I have to wear a face/beard net.

Ive always used the cheap lightweight mesh masks, but was contemplating using nothing this year. I'll most likely have it in my pack or pocket tho just in case I change my mind.
Deer hunting is another story tho, never without.

Beard... and a short brimmed hat so that if I get really close to elk I can tilt the brim down and try to avoid direct eye contact. I'll look around with only one eye peeking halfway out. Works well up close.


I just got a Sitka Jetstream hat and I love it. Before that it was a bowhunters ballcap with a short bill from the Montana Bowhunters Association.

All you guys' and your beard talk! lol I wish that I could take advantage of this tactic but for my facial hair to be adequate enough to cover my facial features', I would have had to start growing it last October and my job will not allow me to do such thing, so I guess the beard option is out for me! lol

I use nothing. I place my bow in front of my face when I think a critter could be looking my way.

I also work in a career field that requires the employees to be clean shaven. It is the natural gas industry, and they are super strict on the shaving part. the best part is my job is not a field job and i am considered an office only job even tho i share an office with all of the field guys. I get to wear regular civilian clothing and grow a beard and/or goatee no matter how the other guys feel about it. They really dont like that i have this perk but i love it !!!!!

I carry both paint and a netted mask. I wear the netted mask up or when at a stand. When on stalks I wear paint. A mask can get in the way stalking.
On a couple cold mornings Ill wear a Hunter Specialties mask for a bit of added warmth.I got a Sitka under layer that has a pretty much built in lower mask,
While archery hunting we're normally in the shade.,,. Waterfowl pick out a glowing/shining face in the sun and flair. I wear a net mask hunting coyotes, While not always super important if your in the shade of a sage brush.
My daughters all have blonde hair. My middle daughter plans to use camo paint on our hunts this fall.
The problem with camo paint what you miss wiping off at night will be on your sleeping bag in the morning.

Face paint when it's hot, sitka open country neck gator when it's starts to cool down....

every year I have at least one encounter where I believe covering my face gave me an edge
