Opinions on Rage Broadheads on elk?

Guys I'm trying to decide on a good broadhead to use for elk. My question is what's everyone's opinion on rage broadheads on an animal the size of an elk?
I like the rages on deer but I've never killed an elk. Last year I used the shuttle t and wasn't to impressed so I want to try something different. This will be for Colorado and from what I understand mechanical broadheads are legal unless I missed it. So if anyone has an opinion on these for elk or would highly recommend a different broadhead let me know all is welcome!!

IMO stick with a good fixed blade. Murphy is alive and well in the elk woods. One less thing to go wrong. There are some great fixed blade broadheads out there, Muzzy, VPA, Solid, Slick Trick, Magnus, Ect. JMO

I've posted a Primos clip on this before, but they shoot a bull several inches behind the shoulder and get no penetration with a rage. I would never use them after seeing that. I've seen lots of bulls shot and have never seen less penetration. Our group with moderate set ups will all get 2 holes every time with that shot.

I'm not a fan of mechanicals for elk (where they are legal) as there are things that can go wrong upon impact. I've heard more success stories with them than failures, but, a fixed blade never fails if placed properly. Wondering why you weren't impressed with the Shuttle T's? I've had very good luck with them and for me, they fly better than many of the other fixed blade BH's I've tried out of my bow.

What broadheads do you guys like?
Phantom16 I shot a deer or two with them last year and just wasn't impressed as far as blood trails I guess. It's just not one that I have much confidence in for some reason but I haven't used them much either so that really isn't fair.. Plus I'm going from 100 grain to 125 grain so I will need to get a different head anyway but I could still try the shuttle t a little more too.

I shoot a single bevel fixed blade made by a small company named Abowyer. No experience with mechanicals but like others like the more solid fixed blade . Also agree there's a lot of good ones available.

Thanks! I have been really interested in the Magnus broadheads and may try them. I have seen a lot of people say they like slick tricks as well, has anyone compared these two heads or tried them both?
Which Magnus head do you like? With or without the bleeders?

Rage broadheads on elk are a bad idea IMO.

I have never shot the Magnus, although have only praise for the Slick Tricks'...I shoot the 100 grain Standard and have had great results with both accuracy and penetration.

I'm with TB. I shoot a 2 blade single bevel BH. Mine are outback broadheads out of Australia.

Shuttle T's are killers, but we have experienced the same problems with blood trails. Go slick trick or RAD heads. Sharpest blades on the market.

I take out a lot of guys and do the calling for them. Having said that. Before they come out I make sure they are shooting ONLY fixed blade heads !!

Elk live in thick country and if there is a small willow or branch against the elk at your shot a fixed blade tipped arrow will still hit your mark. An open on impact head might not even get to the elk or much worse you'll wound it !!

Guys if your gonna chase elk take 10 minutes to tune your bow using fixed bladed heads !! That's all it takes and you owe it to the elk !!

I have shot my last 3 bulls with G5 Strikers but if I were to buy new heads right now I would get Slicktricks. I believe Twinkieman has shot some bulls with them and is happy with the results. They have very heavy blade inserts and are very sharp good quality steel.

Oh Lord. This subject always turns into a major debate on other forums. There will always be the guys that says he shot a turkey with a Rage at 20 yards drawing 70 lbs and it bounced right off (me!) and the guy who says he shot a elk with one and it fell over dead in it's tracks.

So just like everything in elk hunting, since opportunities aren't around every corner you try to pay attention to details to do everything in your power to be prepared and make the first shot count. Having a head with moving parts is a step in the wrong direction. I guess I have to say "in my humble opinion" since this is the world wide web. There are 1 or 2 mechanicals out there that seem to be up to killing elk. Rage is NOT one of them in my book because of 2 huge factors. Huge being the key word. They have a huge cutting diameter. Too big to slip between ribs. And they have a huge cutting angle. Or maybe I should say no cutting angle. The blades are nearly perpendicular to the ferrule. That's terrible. I always laughed at the commercial where Chuck Adams says "It's like hitting them with an axe" Yes, it is. When you throw an axe at a tree it bounces of a lot of times even when it hits at the right angle. It has no point!

I think it's safe to say that the main reason hunters consider mechanicals is because of broadhead accuracy. But there are fixed blade heads out there that fly so good that shouldn't really be an issue. Slick Tricks are probably in the top 3 heads used for elk. They are tough and fly great. They are really just an improvement over the Muzzy design which was pretty darn good.

But these days I am shooting Magnus heads. Both the Buzz Cuts and the Black Hornets. They fly the same. From the first day I shot a Buzzcut I was amazed at how straight they fly even at long distances. I now prefer the Stingers over them because I don't like the serrated edge with the thick elk hair and hide. Then they came out with the Black Hornet which I had to try and they are sweet too. (non serrated) I wish there was a steeper blade angle on them though. The angle on Buzcutts and Stingers is just awesome. The advantage of all three Magnus heads is the cut on contact tips. The pro of the Black Hornet is a thicker blade which is nice on a COC head. It's less likely to roll over at the point if it hits bone. Man those things penetrate like a warm knife through butter. I'd highly suggest trying them.

And like was mentioned above Paul at Magnus has a no loophole warranty. Even if you miss your target and smash one off the block wall on your garage send it in and he will mail you a new one. Hard to beat that.

I'm still unsure if a 2 or 4 blade would be better any opinions or experience on that on that Magnus heads?

I like the 2 blade heads with a bleeder blade. They fly and penetrate great but unlike a true 2 bladed head the bleeder keeps the entry hole from clotting up as fast so you get all of the advantages of 3 and 4 blade heads without the planing.

hey Joe, see my comments on the Black Hornet in a previous thread in the Gear Forum. hated to have to post it b/c I love Magnus. But was just my honest feedback and experience with them.
