Recovery Drinks

Postby Kessler10 » 07 05, 2016 •  [Post 1]

Any recommendations for good recovery drink/powder mixes to take while in the back country? I never am able to eat/drink enough once I get into the high country and push my limits physically. Its alwasy a chore just getting calories down (or at least the amount I need). So hoping to find a drink to supplement my food and water intake to help recover. I know about Wilderness athlete, any others?

Thanks!

If you're looking for a recovery drink, you want something with glutamine in it. If you're talking about recovery from trekking the backcountry, then I'd go with electrolyte tabs you can drop in your water. For example: NUUN, GU, or Camelbak all make tablets.

I'm going to give these guys a try:

Even if he's a LOBO (University of New Mexico).

Here's my routine. Makes me sound like a pill popper when I look at it, but it works :D

All in addition to normal meals and snacks.

Morning:
Wilderness Athlete Hydrate & Recover
Wilderness Athlete Energy & Focus (Caffeine - so I won't have this at night)
Wilderness Athlete Green Infusion
1 Scoop Chocolate Protein Powder
Wilderness Athlete Altitude Advantage
Fish Oil Capsules
Multivitamin
Glucosamine Capsules

Lunch:
Wilderness Athlete Hydrate & Recover
Wilderness Athlete Energy & Focus (Caffeine - so I won't have this at night)
1 Scoop Chocolate Protein Powder

Dinner:
Wilderness Athlete Hydrate & Recover
Wilderness Athlete Green Infusion
1 Scoop Chocolate Protein Powder
Fish Oil Capsules

I also pre-mix all of the powders into single serving small vacuum packed bags and label them. Pull one out, dump it in my Nalgene, add water and you're good to go.

I also pack some Nuun tablets for if it's really hot and I'm sweating a lot to supplement the above.

Do you mix the hydrate and Recover + energy and Focus in one drink/bottle or drink them separate? Which flavors do you like from WA? I have the Hydrate and recover Lemon lime and think I am going to get the energy and focus as well. thought maybe mixing the mango energy and focus with the lemon lime hydrate and recover would be good??
Does that Altitude advantage help?

Thanks!

I mix Hydrate and Recover, Energy and Focus, Protein Powder, Green Infusion all together in one small vacuum bag well before I leave on my trip so I have small single serving bags I can drop into another ziploc with all food for one day. When I'm ready - just dump everything in a Nalgene together and shake it up. My version of a "Superman" drink. I just make sure I'm not taking Energy & Focus at night because of the caffeine.

I haven't used the Lemon Lime, I think mine is "Berry Blast" - but I'm sure it'd be fine. But I also never have a problem eating or drinking anything - I pretty much just make sure I'm eating / drinking enough to stay hydrated.

Hard to tell if the Altitude Advantage works - but I can say coming from sea level I haven't had one bit of an issue with altitude taking it and staying well fed and hydrated taking everything above. Granted - where I've been in Montana tops out around 8800' and I camped mostly closer to 7500' - so it's not Colorado altitudes.

I admire your effort in mixing all of your products together before you hunt. Thats shows great commitment. I simply put two packs of powdered Crystal Light Energy in my camel back and then I am off for the day. There are other brands we have used as well that you can purchase at the grocery store.
