Knife Sharpener... What's in your pack?

Sooooo, you've worked your way through most of the boning out process and realize that your fixed blade knife needs a little "bump". What do you cats carry for a lightweight knife sharpener? Inquiring minds want to know

Safety first.

the adrenalin is coming or going..either way, it's sucky to be all jittery.

tired, hands are bloody and slippery. it's more than likely getting dark and i'm working with a headlamp. there is one option. an ACCUSHARP. it might not be the perfect tool for my knives..most of them are scandi grinds, but it works and it works damn near perfectly. it's safe with wet hands.

i love the feeling of dragging a rough blade thru it, and you feel it instantly when it hits that mark when the blade is honed..it gets buttery smooth. done.

I have a Simmons Sharpie with ceramic dowel incert. This is the best little sharpener I have found for broadheads and knives in the field touch up.

I carry a small handheld knife sharpener which has the ceramic dowel insert on 1 side and I believe it is carbide on the other side, nothing fancy, although it has done the trick for me.

A very old Schrade Walden Steel. Couple swipes and I'm good to go.

What's in my pack? Another super sharp knife. I'd never stop and lose daylight to sharpen a knife while doing the dirty work. I have 2 fixed blade knives and a Havalon. Knife gets dull... boom done.

You're no daisy, you're no daisy at all! I have an old model BH sharpener that I've used to touch up fixed blade knives while working on an elk. Was just curious to hear what other folks carry.

What he said. I always carry two knives. But I also have a small DMT red diamond stone with me. A couple of laps with the stone each quarter and the edge is as good as new. No reason to take the time to find the other knife in the bottom of the pack. The reason for the other knife is just in case one goes totally walkabout mid dissection.

I carry a good knife that holds an edge
But in my meat handling package are 2 Skinning knifes,.., a steel and an Arkansas stone.

Mine would too especially if I get better at butchering. For ex. Blade edges last longer if you minimize cutting hair. So when I learned cut from under the skin and out, that really helped. Especially on a gritty hog.

Always cut from the inside, and be a bit gentle around bone. If not boning out, be smart and work your way into the hip and shoulder,.. Knowing anatomy can make this job easy ( and a light really helps )

A Kaufman custom knife and a havalon with extra blades. Has worked excellent on numerouse elk. However I do have a small gerber steel that I have also carried before the days of the Havalon

Same here....it's heavy but dang it sure is nice esp when working on a real mature bull...pretty sure that neck hide is Kevlar!

I really wish I liked the havalon more but there just too sharp and light weight for me....i nearly cut off my thumb once and ever since I just have a hard time doing any fast work with it....i have the short stubby blades tho for scalping and other miscellaneous small knife jobs

I have one just like this except it is Outdoor Edge's model. Couple swipes and you are good to go.

Rada sharpener. Cheap, light sharpen just about anything with it. Chef knife to broadheads.

I'm with Curly, but I've got the Gerber vital. The blades change out a bit easier than the Havalon with the push button release. I use a Lansky sharpener for my fixed blades and folders, but it's a bit bulky to take on the trail.
