Elk Track Knives

Every heard of them? Well, they are one of the finest custom western knives available. Norm Larson started making knives about 8 or 9 years ago because after 40 years of elk hunting he had never found what he considered the perfect knife for elk hunters. He's taken apart elk in the field with everything from a small pocket knife to an 8" boning knife to a hatchet (told me that was not pretty). He tried hard stainless cpm steels, D2 tool steel and carbon steels and decided that a well treated carbon steel is the best for a field knife. Sure s30v will get razor sharp but can you sharpen it up in the field after 4 elk in a couple of days? No. D2 never gets quite as sharp but will keep it's toothy edge but is again hard to sharpen; carbon steels however get wicked sharp and you CAN rework the edge with just a few strokes on a stone or diamond steel. Norm found a 3 1/4 drop point blade to be the perfect knife for western hunting.

The blades are all made with 52100 carbon steel. The steel is not cut from a flat sheet but forged from a 3" bar. Forging gets the steel grain structure nice and even allowing a better edge with better edge retention and strength. Norm also offer the same blades in 1095 steel which is not forged. Also, he makes a few Damascus knives with Damsacus blades made by Two Finger Knife in Idaho Falls, ID.

OK, I receive my new favorite knife in the mail today (first pic) and have got to say, I'm more than impressed! It's one of the Western Hunter Series, 1095 carbon, light buckeye burl handle (stabilized). The picture does not serve it justice... these knives are beautiful. It fits perfect in my hand and "will" get to have it's way with an elk this fall.

blade thickness, length of blade, overall length..

i love that orange G10 blade. makes it easier to find in the green bloody grass.

Pointysticks you're right the orange is great for a working knife. It's what I use. Blade is a beefy 5/32 thick but well balanced in your hand, 3 1/4 blade length,overall length of 8 1/4.

I bought one of these knives from Norm a few weeks ago, and let me say ... it's a real beauty! The knife is perfectly balanced in the hand, the blade is razor sharp, and the knife sort of "locks" into the sheath. I'm really hoping to use it this coming Elk season! The one I ordered was a Western Hunter style, 52100 steel blade, brass pins, and iron wood handle.
