Help with my GPS

I purchased an Oregon 550t last week. I see it is preloaded with 100K topo maps (so it says). Do I still need to purchase that SD card with the Colorado topo maps? My thought is maybe the SD card I would purchase would have better topo maps with more detail. But wanted to get feedback on this

Think of the 100k maps as general area maps and the chips as more specific. Kind of the difference between a state map and a city map.

If you need the accuracy of a city map then you might want to get the chip. Will show a lot more detail (contours, trails, streams etc.). If private property boundaries are an issue, you can get a chip that will show that as well. I have some chips from Trax maps that I like (board sponsor).

You can also get 24k topo maps from Garmin on a CD that you can transfer to your GPS. These don't show private property boundaries.

You can download free 1:24K topo maps for Garmins at www.gpsfiledepot.com. That's where I got the Topo maps for my Garmin Oregon 450. Much more detail than the preloaded 1:100K maps and did I mention it was free lol.

Thanks. I didn't know I could do that. I'm not too happy with the preloaded contour intervals.

I just installed the Wyoming onXmaps card. Can't remember offhand if that means I'll have more detail or not when I'm there. Anyone know?
