Thoughts on rangefinder

Looking at making a purchase of a rangefinder. Interested in features, brands, and how much distance it should be able to range.

First thing is are you hunting with a rifle at ranges over 600yrd or with a bow and muzzleloader at short ranges? I mostly bow hunt so my rangefinder is good out to 600yrds and has for brands I like Nixon ,Vortex or Leopold and they must have the (Arc)ability to range true distance at angles from a tree stand or up hill.

Make sure you get an angle compensating one. that means that it gives you the horizontal distance to the object, which is the distance you need. Critical for bow hunters, not critical in most situations for rifle hunters, but why not get that feature anyway?

I just bought a Leupold 1200 and love it. You cannot beat Leupold's customer service.

How far are you hoping or anticipating to shoot? What would your max distance be?

I'd probably not take a shot past 400 yards. But ranging out past that would be helpful to get an idea of how far out they are, so I would know about how much closer I would need to go to start considering that shot.

If money is not a factor, Leica is the best by a long shot. If you are on a budget, Leupold and Vortex are both pretty good.

Yeah, a Leica 1000 would be perfect if you want to range out there a ways.
