sharpening broadheads

hey guys, I have been working on bringing these montecs to edge. I do not have a flat fire, so I have been using the coarse side of my flat stone to get everything even. I am noticing my sharpie mark tends to stay on the very tip, were talking just a small bit there but I cant seem to get honed. seems pretty consistent with all 6 heads, the edges are easy to get sharp, it just seems this last bit of the tip is being difficult, any suggestions or should I just flip the stone and hone it with the fine side?

I ended up just applying more pressure to the heavy grit side, then followed elknuts suggested method of 50 passes then 40 then 30 ect. I am no good st belt strapping, but man.. these things are looking brutally sharp.

i use a big 12" flat file. it wasnt expensive..i search and searched until i found a USA Nickelson. they are getting rare now. i see Oregon files at my local lawn supply shop. i think those are Swedish made?

using a flat file gets things along FAST. they are toothy and sharp. subsequent moves to finer stones makes it feel less sharp, but i know they are crazy. honestly, i think i should own a gram scale. i bet you can take off enough material to actually lighten them.

I'm new, Isn't using a file overly aggressive to sharpen broadheads?
I have some NAP Hellrazors, same design as the Montec imo, and have been slowly adding a finer edge to them using a "green" Dia-Sharp credit card hone (1200 grit). I can still get it to take hair off my arm.
How sharp is sharp enough with at 60 degree edge angle? The trade off is a 15 degree X-Acto blade angle going to hold up in a hunting environment?
What's the accepted compromise?

I've always meant to try the hell razors. My friend tells me they are very sharp and fly like montecs. Montecs are not that sharp. If you mark them with a sharpie and flat file them, you see this.

It's just what I do. Not saying it is perfect. I followed the SS Snuffer YouTube vid. Another similar BH.

the montecs were not that sharp out of the box, but they also were not really too tough to get sharp. It would have taken me 20 minutes each if I had a file. I did continue to notice the tips were not dead on out of the box, we are talking maybe 1/8" down from the tip stayed black for a long time. It was possible to get it honed smooth and shiny though.. something everyone should be doing anyways.. now I have a nice patch of arm hair missing and a sense of accomplishment

Agree on all points. My friends hated sharpening them and gave up. One trip, I found a pile of them on my tailgate. They all gave them to me. I had 20 of them at one point. Now I bet I still have a dozen. I'm rich with montecs!
