Help with arrow length

Hi guys, I'm still fairly new to archery so I'd appreciate any input or advice on this. I have a 27" draw, and I had my arrows cut to 26" so that the end of the shaft is roughly 1.5" past my drop away rest. I'm just kind of nervous to shoot this with a broadhead because of the position of the broadhead relative to my hand. It's entirely above the shelf, behind the front of the riser, and the broadhead blades just barely clear the pad on the shelf. Am I right in thinking this is unsafe? I've attached a picture below - based on this, how much longer do you think the arrow should be?

This is exactly why I keep my arrows longer than my draw length. I used to shoot shorter arrows, and it made me really nervous having a broadhead behind my hand. I keep my fingers folded in a "dead spider" grip, but if I ever spaced out and let a finger get loose, it could be bad news.

My draw length is 26.5" and I have my arrows cut to 27.5" so I don't have to have finger safety in the back of my mind. Really, you can have your arrows as long as you want as long as the spine is correct and they tune well.

Your arrows are fine that way. Some guys like them longer but I've been shooting like that for years.

i like my arrows an inch longer too!!

your bow cant even shoot a decap broadhead i honestly think you are safe..modern drop away rest have really stable containment..not like the older rest.

BUT..i dont grip a bow like you do in that pic. i am open handed hands sloped at 45 deg..so my fingers are further out front.

Thanks for the replies. pointysticks, now that you mention it, I think I grip the same way you do, I don't know why I was just holding it like that while my wife took the picture! I can't see how my fingers would ever make contact with the broadhead in that position though. Perhaps I'm just being overly cautious, but I guess what makes me nervous is the possibility of the arrow falling out while drawing, and then accidentally releasing it.

If you are nervous, I would recommend getting arrows an inch longer than your draw length. Thats what I did, 1 in. longer so 29 inch arrows for me, I too was nervous about the BH being behind my finger.

Personally, I like my arrows as short as possible to minimize arrow profile and maximize FOC (but I also shoot heavy broad heads and inserts). But, most importantly, you want an arrow that tunes well, and that may or may not influence your length. The absolute last thing I'd consider is if the broad head is too close to my hand. If you are nervous, get a new rest. You have nothing to worry about if you shoot a full containment like the Pro-V or Smackdown Pro. I can't tell what that arrow rest is, but if you are concerned that it could allow the arrow to flop onto your hand, then replace it.

That is how I shoot mine as well. Cut my arrows 1 inch past the front of the rest. My rest sits behind my shelf. If cut your fingers/hand something went pretty wrong with the shot.
