What Broadhead You Using This Year?

Postby ElkNut1 » 08 19, 2012 •  [Post 1]

I seem to always be switching it up year to year just for grins! I am going with the Viper Trick from Slick Trick this year, how about you hunters? I'd like like to see the variety!

G5 Montec CS for elk, however the Solid Broadhead by Steve Speck has got my interest. Ulmer Edge expandable for whitetails.

Shuttle T's here as well.

I did use a Grim Reaper for antelope yesterday and it did it's job. As many of you Shuttle T guys know, when the wind picks up it's hard to locate those T locks. Out of my bow anyway, they like to sail! If it's windy while I'm deer hunting I'll gladly use it again, but for elk Shuttle T's all the way. Might pick up a package of slick tricks next year and see if I like them.

This is my first year to try them as they are a new head by Trophy Taker. They fly great and have been given great reviews. They were designed by Randy Ulmer's brother if I am not mistaken. I am able to kill a very liberal amount of whitetails in my part of the state so hopefully I will be able to give you some good broadhead entry and exit pictures. I like my fixed blades for elk however.

I have got 2 packs of them for whitetails. Been reading alot about them. I think I am going to stay with fixed for now, if I was going to use an expandable on elk that would be it though.

I don't blame you for sticking with a fixed blade! It is interesting that nobody is jumping on the Ulmers for elk tho. Or at least not admitting to it!! :)

i will shoot the G5 montecs again this year. they fly with my fieldtips. no need to change now. were they dull? absolutely. so dull, some friends just give up and give them to me. needlesstosay, i have alot of them. i copy the snuffer SS (youtube) method of sharpening them and they come out beautiful. i touched up 10 of them last night while watching TV. no doubt, they will penetrate humanly now.

i would love to try the ulmer, but i will reserve them for my AZ hunt, where they are allowed (legal).

Shutte Ts. These cats fly very, very well for me out to 60 yards. Compare them to the flight characteristics of the old Wasp cam locks from the 80s.. My buddy and I did a comparison between these, muzzy 3 blades, and slick trick standards earlier this year (all 100 grain). I shot my Alpine F1 and Joe shot his new Mathews. The Shuttle Ts flew better out of the three. RJ

Agree with Freebird, Took my first elk with Thunderhead 100s back in 96' good broadhead. Not a fan of mechanical on elk (I know may open a can of worms :D ). I switched to Razorcaps a couple years ago and have had good results, I will eventually get to a Hellrazor, Montec type head. Personally I don't like a lot of peices and parts i.e. removable blades, O rings, springs, valves, kitchen sinks etc. :).

I had some store credit from a return at Gander Mtn and picked up a pack of Ulmer Edges this morning. They are sitting on my desk unopened right now. If students will leave me alone, I'm about to open this pack up and check them out. They remind me of the Rocky Mountain (now Redhead) Gator broadheads, which I really liked. We'll see...

I have been using the 125 grain Slick Trick magnums for the last few years. But one thing I like about archery is the tinkering. I am always tinkering with my set up. So after a few years I get the itch and gotta change something up. So this year since I won't be hunting elk with a bow (drew a muzzy tag) and will only be hunting Whitetails in NY. I dcided to try out the 125grain Swacker. Their concept of not opening until its in the vitals intrigued me. So I read a lot of reviews and bought them. Excited to see what all the fuss and excitement over mechanicals is about.

Just flying back from first time elk hunt in New Mexico. I used Rage two blade mechanical and was frustrated to see zero blood trail following a 10-12" penetrating shot just behind the shoulder. Has anyone else experienced this with mechanical broadheads or is this more the nature of the beast? Thanks in advance for input.

125 gn.Thunderheads.

And I'm the opposite of Paul, I hate changing broadheads, I figure it's one less thing to mess with. Until they quit blow through critters I'll keep shooting 'em!

Sorry to hear about your poor preformance with the mechanical heads.
Thru my taxidermy business I get to talk to dozens of bowhunters and there is on average 4 bowhunters a year that will have lost an animal directly thru mechanical broadhead preformance, or lack of it.These are just the guys who admit it! There are just to many variables when you put delicate, moving parts on a broadhead, and in my opinion,no reason whatsoever to do so. Mechanical broadheads in general are a classic example of awesome marketing techniques on a useless, crappy design. Before I lose my temper and go on a tirade, I just want to say SHAME on all the pros promoting this junk, and especially to "Chuck" who,I used to look up to since a kid,who drank the coolaid, and knows better.
That said, the best way to find an awesome broadhead is to go to the reviews at cabelas, bass pro, etc. and find out what the guys are saying. I am a big fan of cut on contact broadheads like the magnus stinger.

So was everyone's choice a good one (for those that got to use them)? I'm itching for a change and looking at either VPA or the new Viper Trick. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Personally, after seeing the destruction in & through bone with viper trick on two bulls I'm staying with these for a while, those viper tricks are the sharpest heads I've ever seen come out of a package & they stay shaving sharp after the kill! They are not tough to re-sharpen either on the KME! I can get them razored up! The steel chisel tip & steel ferrule was tough as nails, I am truly sold on this head!!
