Vanes, Fletching and arrow weight

Postby cnelk » 08 06, 2012 •  [Post 1]

So I got a wild hair today and weighed all my arrows and I noticed that my arrows with vanes are 20grns heavier that fletched ones.

How much difference could this add up to?

Any? Some?

Out to 40 yards maybe an inch or two, but not a huge deal! I'd hunt with one or the other though! (grin) What are your concerns?

I'm with Paul on that. Use one or the other. I think consistency is very important. Inside of distances that you will be shooting at game, probably not a lot of difference. At longer range, you will notice it more.

Brad, Like Paul stated, out to 40 yds you most likely will not see much difference. Shoot both at 50 yards to be sure. You might even get a little left/right variance and they both sound different. I personally match, spin and index all my arrows and broad heads exactly the same. Like Paul said, shoot one or the other. Blazer vanes are hard to beat whether its wet or dry.

Depending on the vane brand and length you can get different weights. Example…2 inch vane tec weights 4.4 grams per vane and blazers are 6 grams per vane. Now add more length to your vanes and wraps they will weigh even more. Remember more weight on the back end decreases your Front of Center (FOC). I like to keep as much weight forward (FOC) as possible. My FOC is at 14.9% and broadheads fly like a dream.

cnelk,

I said grams...meant to say grains for eash vane weight. Also your nocks will weigh different...post your arrow setup and I'll plug it in my Archers Advantage program to tell you what your setup is.

I shoot GoldTip XT Hunters
27 3/4" long [insert to valley of tip]
4" vanes
100gr SlickTricks

The above arrow weight is 380grains.
I wanted more weight without changing too much so I added a length of trimmer line inside my shaft [40grs]

420grains total

My FPS is 255 with 63# draw weight

My concerns?
None really. Just puttering and wondering. I get really good groups out to 60yds with either vanes or fletching...
But I noticed the fletching just seems to fly 'just a tad better' than vanes

Can I go hunting yet? :)
