Leaking tent

Postby elkohalic » 07 28, 2012 •  [Post 1]

Finally getting some rain here in Iowa. So I set up my tent to check for leaks, found it leaking at 2 different places where the seams are, is there a sealer that anyone knows of or has tried that will fix this. It's only a year old alps tent, kinda disappointing !

Kifaru put out a video on how to do it and what to use, basic home depot stuff like mineral spirits and silcone, I just can't remember the exact stuff off the top of my head.

Just an fyi...the more expensive the tent the less they come seam sealed from the mfg and have to do it yourself, it is a way to keep costs down.

We put a tarp ( fly ) over all our tents. Water seeping thru seems several years ago started us doing that. Even our heavily waxed wall tents would give into the constant rain eventually on the roof seems. Covering them with a tarp solved our problem.

GE clear silicone cut with mineral spirits is what I use.

Disposable foam brushes and Dixie cups help.

We sell a couple of products that will stop the leak. If your leak is a seam leak, we sell seamsure and seamsealer, and if you have a rip in your tent I would suggest the McNett's tenacious tape. I have used all of these and they work perfectly, and are made for tent products.

I would highly recommend the SilNet Silicone Seam Sealer! It is simple to use, very effective! We seem to get very good response from our customers on this product.

1) Just clean the surface to be sealed with isopropyl alcohol.
2) Apply Sil Net to inside of seam, apply thin film across taut threads and under folds
3) Let it dry at least 3-6 hours before storing the tent or using the tent

Ok I got some clear silicone and mineral spirits. Going to do a test spot on a piece of patch material that came with the tent. The tent has been set up for 4 days now in my back yard, and some local tom cat has left his mark on it. Friggin cats!!!
