Traditional -- Arrow Help

Guys... My (adult) son received a 50# PSE recurve for his first archery elk hunt this year. I know next to nothing about arrow selection and broadheads for traditional or recurve bows. Any help would be greatly appreciated. His draw length is short like mine - about 28". In a perfect world, he would be able to hunt with one of my old bows, but he's a lefty...

You might start with a GT 35/55 leave it full length and use a 125-150gr cut on contact head such as a Wensel Woodsmen or Muzzy Phantom etc. If your not a fan of GTs try something in the .500 spine range in other carbons or 2018s in aluminum. If he will be shooting off the shelf you'll need to use feather fletching for sure! Hope this helps!

Aluminums are easier to tune than carbons. You might want to look at 2016 Easton's. You can usually find them for about $50 a dozen. The black ones are the cheapest and they are fine. It may say 500's on the pack instead of 2016.

Hey Wyo, your son is going to have a blast with his new Recurve! My son is the one who actually got me into trad gear & it's a ton of fun & the trad stuff is a killer for sure! I'm with these guys in mind & thought! a 500 spine arrow should fit the bill nicely with a 28" draw at 50# - I'd look for a finish arrow wt of 475grn to 525grn. Anything in there will do nicely, closer to 500grn would be optimum. Have him build his arrow to that total arrow wt & that should give him an insert & head wt of 185grn to 200grn, it seems to be a killer combo for my setups at 55# at 27" - Of course feathers are ideal in the 5" range for his arrows. I too would consider aluminum or carbon for arrows, personally I like the .500 spine beman "classics" arrows best, I can have 200grn up front & my total arrow wt still is at 500grns. I've had pass-throughs on elk & muley bucks with that arrow setup. It's a good setup out to 40yds no problem if his skill level is there.

Yep. Something around a 500 should be perfect. Pick some two blade broad heads and you should have no problem getting them to fly straight. Once he gets used to shooting the bow he can get really picky and cut down the arrows a quarter in at a time till they fly absolutely perfect.

Thanks for the help guys!! The local bow shop has the GT 35/55's with feathers in stock and I think that's where we'll start. Put a 125gr head and go from there. Can't wait to start practicing in the backyard. As soon as this snow melts!! Thanks again!
