DIY - Camo

I'm sure most of you have seen pics of my camo rifle stock project . . . I love to torture myself, so I'm going to do another one. The last one was a digital theme.

This time I'm building an AR-15 (223). Once I get a few more pieces, I'll paint them the "Kryptek" camo theme. It will be the same process as last time, but I'll be going with different colors. Still haven't decided what yet, open to suggestions.

Cutting such small (skinny) lines is painstakingly slow.

What you have looks good. You don't want to mix me and art. That would not be a good combination.

Swede, I bet you'd be surprised of what you can do. The only requirement for doing what I have done thus far is patience, each of those small panels took me about 2 hours to cut, so I do one per evening while the wife and I are watching tv. Next up . . . rattle can, anybody with a thumb and a couple of digits can spray rattle paint over a stencil.

Nice ! I've been trying to find a solution for my Tikka ( synthetic stock). I don't like the "plasticky" look and feel of it, although it drives tacks. Looked into hydro dipping but ruled it out based on cost and the fact that I would have to completely disassemble gun, scope, etc.

I thought about a rattle can job but assumed it wouldn't be very durable unless I applied a clear coat, increasing reflectivity. I also would like to add some grippy texture to the finish...

Have you looked into epoxy based paints ? If it would adhere, that garage floor epoxy they sell might be the ticket. You can add superfine sand to give it some grip...

Upper and Lower are both DPMS, and I'll most likely go with the DMPS guts kit for the internals.

Huntrgathr, I used Brownells Aluma-Hyde II and never applied a clear. I wouldn't say that the finished paint surface is grippy, but it's better than a standard synthetic surface. My paint has made it through a full year of backcountry torture, dirt bike rides, rain, brush . . . the whole gauntlet. Hasn't shown any signs of wear and I have really dinged it a few times on rocks or branches. I'm probably going to use this product again for this next paint job.

Not sure how artistic you are but I thought of a way to do a digital paint job on a stock that's MUCH simpler than what I did (spraying over digital shaped stencils that I cut out). If you order some of the pelican case foam inserts that have the removable pieces for custom shape protection, you could do a base coat color (desert tan), then use the foam pieces for dabbing into other colors of paint into a digital pattern. The lines wouldn't be as crisp as the method that I used, but I still think it would look good.
