Broadhead for my Kodiak Magnum

Postby cnelk » 02 25, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Looking for any input on selecting a broadhead for my '69 KMag.

Here is my arrow recipe:
GoldTip 35/55 Traditional
28.5"
50gr insert
125gr point

438 grains
~186fps
33.6 KE
9.3 GPP

So...
What would be a good 125gr - 135gr ELK broadhead for this setup?
[I have shot 145gr points with nice flight too]

Thanks in advance!

I'd likely go with a magnus or silver flame. The silver flames are pricey but they are also razor sharp and bomb-proof.

Seen a lot of the Bear heads curl on the tip...me, for the money, you cant beat a Muzzy Phantom Broadhead. 125 grains or 120 without the bleeder. Its easy to sharpen, holds an edge, and its a tough lil head. i shoot the 100 grainers...
If you want to spend the money, look into the S30V broadhead from Solid Broadhead Company. I've been playing with this head for the past two months, and am very very impressed. I've tried to destroy one and havent yet. They fly great from my longbows and recurves with 450 grain FMJ's, and you should see how they fly from a compound at 320 fps...well worth looking in to.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Im not sure I could go back and use the old Bear broadheads.
I still have a few kicking around here.

I was looking at the Zwickey 'Eskilite' broadhead.

Thoughts?

Zwickey is a great head. This is easily seen in the company's longevity. I know quite a few accomplished trad guys who swear by 'em.

Yep, those swickey heads can be deadly & in 2-blade you can really razor those bad boys up. My son took a bull a few years back with a cedar shaft & swickey head with bleeders out of a 60# recurve, the arrows were 525grn total wt. He actually caught the bull low on the scapula & it blew through 4"-5" The bull piled up inside 200yds. Whew, he was fortunate there! Tough head.

At 50# draw I'd consider bumping up the arrow wt up 25-40grns. Just a suggestion is all. You're in for a ton of fun bud, good luck!

I agree with Paul on bumping the weight up a little on total weight. I really like to be as close to 10 GPP. I also like about 23% FOC. With a higher momentum you will be much better off. Just my 2cents.

Honestly, how much penetration will you gain by adding only 40 grains? Plus, you'll have to retune the arrows, cause even 40 grains will effect the spine. And 40 grains wont increase the momentum either. The chose of broadheads would effect penetration more. Look into the Stringer broadheads, one of the toughest broadheads there is, plus the penetration with them is unreal. I dont shoot them cause I cant...sponsorship thing...
I like the Zwickeys, and use them on my wood shafts. Like the big Deltas...

Broadhead for my Kodiak Magnum

On a separate note, I'm assuming you have bare shaft tuned those arrows? For what its worth,I shot the same ones out of a 40# bow and found the spine to weak, even with a 75g tip. Granted I shoot 30.5 inch arrows w 29.5 draw (target shooting). I'm now shooting the 55/75 with 100g, arrows fly much better. That said, can't tell a significant difference with fletched arrows but the bare shaft difference is major.

Yes I have bare shafted them.
Bare shaft tuning is more for checking nock point or brace height [center-shot].

But Im not having any flight trouble now, but some broadheads will plane.
Thats the reason for this thread to see if anyone knows of certain BH that would do that or under-perform in general

cnelk, why didn't you say that in the 1st place???(grin)

With trad gear setups I've not seen any BH not perform that was a decent head. We've shot elk with Stingers, Scirocco's, Woodsmans, SnufferSS, Silver Flames, Swickeys and all did their job. As long as we did our practicing & razored up each head they did theirs. It really comes down to preference.

LOL!! I hear ya! To date I've not had one issue with myself or the other two that have hunted with trad gear & various heads. I know Lou was shooting Muzzy 3-blades heads & those seem to work well for him. The head I want to use with trad gear is that 4-blade Viper Trick, that is a fantastic little head that's tough as they come.

Yes, Lou mentioned that he uses those BH.
He shoots a higher poundage bow than I do and the chisel points / 3 blades may perform better
He came and gave me some Chit last night while I was shooting league. ;)
Lightning didn't hit me either Lou....

I have a call into SlickTrick as they have 2 new Broadheads coming out for Xbows.
One is 150gr the other is 175gr.
I am curious to see if they come with 8/32 threads to use on typically arrow threading

I will let you all know what I find out
