Brakes on Bike Trailers

Postby crazyaboutelk » 02 02, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Hey folks,

I know there has been alot of discussion and interest in brakes on bike trailer for getting game out on steep logging roads. Since I live and hunt in Western Montana, I see plenty of steep logging roads. I have attached a few pics of the brakes on my bike trailer. The cables cost about $15, and I sawed the brake calipers off of some old bike forks. I have not tested the brakes with a load yet. However, it seems to work pretty well so far.

Where in western Montana? Just curious.

A very nice addition. I think between having 2 brakes on the cart AND the brakes on the bike you'll be fine. Just don't get her up to 30mph or something. lol If worse came to worse you could go to 80cc motorcycle tires with drum brakes. But I don't think there are any gated roads with grades steep enough to need to though.

Go to the top of a hill around your house and tell the wife or girlfriend to get in and go for a test spin. If you're single test it on a sister or something.

If it works you can start taking it to the bar to pick up chics!

Looks pretty cool but I think it would be even better if they were mounted just above the frame instead of below it. They might be less apt to jam up with mud and dirt that way.

Brakes on Bike Trailers

Postby slim9300 » 02 04, 2013 •  [Post 6]

I had brakes like that on my cart and they didn't help with a heavy load. My hand couldn't apply enough force to squeeze the brakes hard enough when going down steep slopes. I have always wanted to create some kind of disk brake setup for the trailer but couldn't justify the cost. My bike with high end disk brakes does pretty well of stopping the trailer just enough to keep it going a couple miles per hour downhill. We normally take out the elk in one trip.
