New rifle - Straight wall cartridge

Postby Indian Summer » 12 30, 2024 •  [Post 1]

The city of Pittsburgh is located in Allegheny county. Since the beginning of time that county has been shotgun only for deer. A couple years ago they opened it up to straight wall cartridges. This is becoming a more common thing. It’s prevalent in some states in the Midwest. In 2019 Winchester introduced the 350 legend. A 35 caliber straight wall with very minimal recoil. This past year in 2023 they unveiled its big brother the 400 legend. After doing my usual intensive research, I settled on this gun over the 360 buck hammer, 450 bushmaster, and the 45–70 government. I didn’t need that much gun and the recoil that goes with them. Around here it is rare to shoot over 100 yards..

I prefer a bolt action in a rifle. Ruger offered exactly what I wanted in the Ruger American and my local Sportsman’s Warehouse just got one in stock. Those guns and the ammunition that goes with them doesn’t last in stores very long. I had a Leupold 2–7 power shotgun scope laying around so I threw that on. It’s a perfect match. The gun came in two barrel lengths. I chose the shorter 16 inch one for the thick cover that I hunt. The gun comes with a factory installed muzzle brake, and a pretty cushy recoil pad. I think it’s going to be a joy to shoot.

Winchester recently released a 190 grain polymer tip bullet that expand and dump all of its energy similar to the shotgun slugs. I’m used to using. I bought two boxes of that from Scheels. Next chance I get, I’m gonna go out and break in the barrel and get it sighted in.

She’s a beaut!

I’m not too recoil shy. The gun is said to have 55% less recoil than my 12 gauge slug gun. That sounds good to me.

Has ruger gotten their $*** together and put 3 position safteys on their new iteration of rifles?

P.s. get yourself a suppressor for that thing!

Yes 3 position safety. I don’t need a suppressor! lol that’s the latest fad. Everybody thinks they need a “suppressor“ on everything. It has a muzzle break. It’s not that big of a gun really. The 350 legend has literally zero recoil. It’s like a 22.

Youre calling suppressors a fad, but have you ever used one?

Hearing protection is not a trend, its a smart move. Hearing loss is permanent. I used to use brakes and cant even look at them now. But im a guy all my coworkers flip crap to over my wearing earplugs all the time. But all the old timers in my industry, deaf as hell.

I can tell ya its great being able to shoot a 16" barrel 444 with no earplugs, and not have my ears ringing all day, or week.

I reject modernity in most regards, but the suppressor thing, its a "fad" for a reason.

But if you think permanent hearing loss is "cool" and masculine then by all means, you do you

Glad to hear they got better safetys now. The 2 pos safety was what made me upgrade my ruger 243

WHAT? I haven’t had hearing for years! I read about all the red take to get suppressor. Pain in the butt. You should hear the 350. Sounds like a .22. I don’t really think the 400 will be that much gun. It’s an enlarged pistol cartridge.

I have both a 350 legend and 450 bushmaster. The bushmaster is loud. Ridiculously loud but it's a killer. I love the 350 legend for whitetails. Smooth shooting and as you said pops like a .22

That’s exactly what I found in my experience and research. I settled on something in the middle.

I like the trajectory of that thing when sighted in at 150 yqrds. Should be a good shooter for the Pen woods.

Anything with a brake will be hearing-loss loud. I regret using brakes for so many years. At least take that thing off and put a thread protector on. As you said, youre not recoil shy, and it kicks less than your 12ga.

All that aside, im not your mom. Seems like a damn good gun that should do the job.

Also, timney makes a real easy to install, plug n play, drop in trigger for ruger americans that are a big step up from the knockoff accutrigger they come with. For a couple hundred bucks or less itll make it like a whole new gun.

Years ago when Winchester brought out their Model 94 Big Bore,I bought one in .375Winchester. A straight walled cartridge. It didn't stay around long as the recoil was staggering.I have an old Winchester 94 ( 1906) in 38-55 now that I shoot a mild load with 280 gr cast.

My soon lives in Finleyville, PA, a little south of Pittsburgh. He is always complaining about deer in his garden. There are more deer in South Eastern and South PA now than in the big hardwoods in North Central PA
