Darn Tough

Postby Jhg » 12 30, 2022 •  [Post 1]

I have generally bought my wool boot socks as "seconds" and because of that when I needed socks it was what was available at the time.
I have run Lorpen, Smart Wool, Bridgedale, Falk and whatever else that was a mostly wool sock.

My sister-in-law has gotten me Darn Toughs and after running them two years will say that if there is a better sock I have not worn it.
I think they are better than SW.
Lorpens are very very good, and the only one I feel that can stand with the DT's.

What do I use my boot socks for?
Summer scouting/hiking, work (tree guy), late season mountain hunting, archery elk, snowshoeing, wandering wilderness and day to day whatever.

I have tried one pair of Darn Toughs and was not impressed. They shrunk terribly on me and the elasticity went out. I have SmartWool socks that are 10 years old and I basically wear SW every day. Maybe I should try another pair if you like them that much!

I wonder if its the model. SW offers so many versions of sock its hard to know what I got- a casual hiker or an actual robust hunt/work sock. The DT's have been bomber for me so far.

I've had them all. I used to be a smartwool guy only but have tried many different kinds in the last few years. Bought a couple pairs of Darn Toughs this year, next hiking season will tell all.

What I really need is a new pair of light hiking boots. I bought the lightest pair Schnees offered two years ago and they are by far the stoutest boots I've ever owned. Need something much lighter for early season.
I hunt therefore I am. I fish therefore I lie.
