What Item do you "Need" to Improve in your Gear?

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 01 01, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Tent? Bag? Pack? Headlamp? Boots? Optics?

What do you know that you absolutely need to upgrade in your gear arsenal. For me, I know I'll be looking into a new headlamp and a better game saw. Now I'm not talking about what you'd really like to have (remote guided un-manned aerial vehicle (UAV) to scout for elk, or, that a troop of boy scouts to pack out your elk.. :)...), but what you already own that's not cutting the mustard. What do you feel (whether you're shopping now or in future years) that you need to upgrade? I'm looking at the Zebra light system and the Sawvivor game saw.

Boots - Either Meindl or Kennetrek

Sleeping Bag and Pad - Probably Marmot and Thermarest

BINOCULARS - Vortex Viper HD from Paul . . . as soon as I get the money.

Wow, my list is a LOT shorter after recent graduation and Christmas presents! I'm a lucky dude. :-)

A bow would be on the top of my list.

All of my equipment is good or better. I have everything I need unless I go on a bivy hunt. For the most part it is a maintenance situation here.

Paul: Why don't you get on Ebay and do a search for ( Molle Pouch). I'm sure you can find something for your GPS there. The Molle II system will fit on the belt or shoulder strap of your pack. Or even on your pack itself if it has the Molle attachment loops. And they make all sorts of shapes and sizes. Take a look and see what you think. There are over 20 pages of them on Ebay.

If it is a Garmin they make a carabiner clip, I use this and attach it to a d-ring on my pack strap. Search amazon for it, costs around $10. It is not noisy and can be mounted anywhere.

Here yeah go http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/s/ref=is_s_ ... armin+cara

Or you can order directly from Garmin for $13, this link tells what models it is compatible to https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=36772

Here is another option if you don't like the carabiner https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=8543

I use something very similar to this for both my GPS and rangefinder.. One on each side of my Eberelestock BW belt. They work very well. Just attach some parachute cord to the unit(s), tie em off to your belt so you don't lose them, and tuck em back into the zippered pouch when not in use.

What I did last year,I took an old range finder holder and attached the holder to my day packs wast belt and attached my GPS tether to a strap on my day pack that way if it ever fell out of the rangefinder holder, the tether would keep it from getting lost.it was always easily accessible.

I carry my rangefinger on a small stretch cord - goes around my neck and then tucks under my right arm
I can reach down, stretch it up to range an object and let it go.
works for me

I want to get about 4 more tree stands in my gear pile

i NEED a new broadhead target. my Rhinehart 18-1 didnt perform like promised. it lasted just a tick past the warranty period. well, i guess it met promises :D

other than that "need"..i have very few "wants". i am gonna focus my money on actual hunting trips..not the gear.

Hands down the weakest link in my gear arsenal is my binos. I want either the Razor HD or the Viper HD. I want the Razor but ONLY if it is $600 optically better than the Viper.

That being said I also need a spotter. My brother has the Viper HD 65mm so I'm torn between the new Razor 65mm or the 50mm.

i am stoked about next sunday. i will be sitting on a hill-side looking for deer in AZ. i will be using my Viper HD 65's that i bought from Elknut for the very first time. am i bummed that Vortex is coming out with a Razor version? hell yes! but, nevertheless, i get to test them side by side with my hunting buddies Leica spotters. i think spotters all get fuzzy from the heatwaves at long distances..so i bet my well priced Vipers will hang. i bet my friend paid 4x what i did!

i may just slip them into my brother's truck and let him keep them (and get myself the Razors!! from paul of course)
