Best skin blade or "hook"?

Postby Jhg » 09 26, 2021 •  [Post 1]

After field processing my recent bull elk in a pretty tough spot, I decided I really needed to take a serious look at those hook style skinners.
I have never used one and would appreciate any first hand experience, what to look for when buying one, and finally, are they worth it?

Thanks

I have an outdoor edge zip that I like. Makes quick work of getting an opening in the skin. Getting the right angle is critical and takes some practice.

Have tried the Wyoming knife but wasn't as easy for me.

If all you are interested in is getting a good gut hook, take your box cutter knife and replace the regular blade with a roofers blade that has the built in hook. Those blades are cheap and re-sharpen with a round file quite easily. I got this tip from Stringunner several years ago and found it to be a good tool to have in my game dressing kit.

I have a switch out knife that has 3 blade options of drop point, gut hook or bone saw. It is made by Kershaw but it looks like they no longer make that one. It works well using the gut hook on it and is easy to sharpen.
