Early Season Boot Warmth

Postby GoGriz1234 » 08 30, 2021 •  [Post 1]

I am heading into the mountains middle of September this year. This is the earliest I have ever chased elk. I have a really nice pair of Schnee’s boots that I usually wear, but they have a few 100 grams of insulation in them. I have an old beat up pair of Danner’s that are not waterproof, but that I hike in during summer. The question for you all is whether or not the insulated boots will work in September, or if I am asking for trouble. I have used them without issue in mid October, but the temp. Difference of likely 20-30 degrees has me worried. What do you guys and gals think?

You never know what to expect in the middle of September. It could be 80* or 20*, Sunny and mild, or stormy with rain or snow. It can be a crap shoot at best!

Here is what I have done in the past that worked for me. I have tried just about everything you can think of from low cut running shoes to gortex insulated 10" boots. And none of them are worth a hoot when the weather gets wet and soggy. I know a guy that went thru 3 pair of gortex boots in 2 days and his feet were soaked. So it might be a good idea to keep a pair of Muck chore boots in camp for those nasty times on the mountain. They are easy to walk in and warm and dry for the worse of weather.

I have used my Schnees in some pretty warm weather, but at some point, they all get too hot. Bring an extra pair of socks.

If it’s good enough for you Lefty, it should work out just fine for me. 8 days away from testing it out!

To follow up on this for future searchers - Lefty was 100% right. I have worn my insulated boots with my two layers of socks putting over 50 miles on them in temps from 78-34 and have had no issues. My late fall setup is now also my September setup.
