Gear review/ SO Cimerron Lite

Postby Elkhntr08 » 08 06, 2021 •  [Post 1]

Got around to put the tent up today.
First thing, no instructions, so watch the YouTube video by SO! Thought I was missing a pole section, but found it nested inside another section. Didn’t set the stacks up properly, but will take care of that when I take it down.
I’m just under 6’ and the way it’s set now, I can almost stand straight up in it. I believe with a little adjustment, I can stand upright in it.
Very lightweight tent. Seemed to go up very quickly with zero issues. Think it took less than 10 minutes from start to finish.
Not sure about the guy out points, it didn’t come with any extra cordage or stakes. I’ll probably use 550 cord that I keep in my pack and site made stakes it the need be.
Next I’m going to get the seams sealed and let it dry.
More to follow.

No, the 12X14 canvas A wall tent is not quite that bad. I can set up my tent alone, but help is always welcome.

Well, I’ll be in southern Wyoming pretty much all of October.

Good looking tent. I bought something similar from Luxe that I will be trying out in September. Does your have a stove jack for adding a lightweight stove for a hot tent if need be? Looking forward to your debrief after the season!

It does have the stove jack. I opted for no screen door. Burnt the stove in the other day. Kinda a pain trying to keep the stovepipe from falling over. Quick tip, don’t grab it when it’s falling.
Got everything packed up and ready to go.

Elkhntr08, once you get to the point where you deploy the stove in the tent, there's some really good tech tips towards the bottom of this thread. https://wapititalk.com/Hunting/viewtopic.php?%20f=14&t=9755&p=110111&hilit=stove+pipe#p110111

Saddlesore (Vince) shows how he would secure this stove pipe in his tipi. I've used his method (including recommended hardware) for several years now in my tipi. Works really well.

OK gentlemen, it’s been a while.
Here’s my personal take on the Cimerron.
I hated it! Set it up October 1st just south of Medicine Bow for a antelope hunt. First issue, nothing but sand, gravel and rocks. Bought a small tarp to help keep things clean. Set my Thermorest cot up in it, keep rubbing the tent with my head.
Could not stand upright in the tent no matter what.
The day after I shot my antelope, the wind blew 25 mph all day. Came back that evening, all the rocks holding the sod cloth were off and everything I owned was covered in dust and dirt. Final straw.
Came home, cleaned it up and sold it.
Bought another 6 man Alaskan Guide tent. Wish I’d have keep my old one, it had aluminum poles.
You may love the lightweight floorless route, but it’s definitely not for me.

That's too bad it didn't work out for you. The floorless shelters definitely have their places, and also have laces where they aren't worth beans. Windy places are one of those places. I love my 10x10 teepee with stove, have used on several backpack hunts and can't think of a much better late fall setup. However if I'm setting up a truck camp, I would never use it. It might be the peak of luxury when you're packed in 6 or 8 miles and it's snowing or raining, but it is a little cumbersome not super comfortable when you're right at the truck and could use your much larger more comfortable tent.
I hunt therefore I am. I fish therefore I lie.

Agree with 7mm; well put. The lightweight tipis w/stoves are hard to beat when you're far, far away from a truck camp.
