Show us your elk arrow/broadhead

Postby BrowTines » 08 14, 2020 •  [Post 1]

I am curious about what arrow people are taking into the elk woods this fall.
Tell us the weight of the entire arrow and the FOC. Tell us what broadhead and it would be nice to show us a photo.

You can use this to determine FOC.
https://www.goldtip.com/Resources/Calculators/FOC-Calculator.aspx

Here is my setup:

Easton FMJ 300 with 150 grain nonvented 3 blade VPA broadhead and Goldtip footer. Shooting 70 lb.
Total weight = 550 grains
FOC = 12%

I did a test last year with a range of point weights at 40 yards, 150 grains gave me the best penetration.

I am taking some Beman carbon arrows with 100 gr chisel point broadheads.

Browtines: What is the cutting diameter on your broadhead? Just curious, as I have some that are similar with a 1 inch diameter. Four blades with a 1 inch dia. cut a little more than a three blade with a 1-3/16 inch diameter. I would think the four blade would fly a little better in a cross wind. What is your experience with your blades? Have you killed elk or deer?

28 1/2”, four fletch Black Eagle Rampage shafts, 100 GN Magnus Stinger BH’s. Total weight is a mere 430 GN’s. Launching them out of my Darton Maverick II, right at 60 LB’s. The arrows fly like darts and the BH kills like a gladiator. I don’t have all the data for the FOC calculation so can’t provide that ;)

Aw , tough one I bought the arrows 5-6 years back, stayed with the same broad heads .

30.5 inch Nugent Goldtip 328.2
three Blazers vanes 18.9
Goldtip lit insert 11.4
nock 11.5
Montec broadhead 100 with glue under 461

For some reason it seems I was high when using 125 then was at one end (10-15%)or the other on FOC with 100 gn broudhead

For what ever reason the arrow pictured was heavier at 32 inches Once these arrows are gone Im going to something lighter and cheaper

Still shooting my Mathews Switchback set at 31"; 70lb

My VPA broadheads are 1 1/8 wide. I have not killed elk with these exact broadheads (this will be my first year with these broadheads). I have killed elk with a similar Magnus Snuffer SS but those were vented. I haven't had much experience with the VPA yet - I had the VPA 125 grain version and those seem to fly quite nicely, the 150s are longer so may increase wind planing but most of my shots are within 40 yards.

I practice for accuracy but was after something that would go through bone if the animal moved on the shot - or at least give me the best chance for a lethal shot no matter what happened.

I have a couple notches on the VPA 150 solids and the performed well. They need a little touching up for my taste but that is not a big deal. Mine are on 31" ACC 371s. Around 550 I think.

Indeed I have found that the VPAs need a touchup sharpening out of the case. One almost expects that since these will require touch up at some point anyway.

this year i shot axis match grades, 300 spine, brass HIT inserts, footer, 6 fletch (pink/white) mini blazers, glory nocks, and 125gr kudu contour plus heads.... TAW 524gr

it's the arrow i will stick with for compounds unless i have an experience that is not good, which i do not expect
