Bow sling---good or bad?

In my archery elk hunting years I've tried a lot of different bow slings. Never have found one that seemed to fit just right. As I tell a lot of my eastern friends,elk hunting is a lot like hiking but carrying a bow (grin). What has worked for those that use them and are they a tool that helps .....mine always seemed to be in my pack or twisted up or just too time consuming to use

You wouldn't catch me in the woods, be it elk, turkey, or deer hunting, without mine. I have a Balcom Sling. Unfortunately they aren't made anymore, used to be distributed by Shaffer Archery.
It has a small lockable swivel hook device that would mount on the cable guard, and later the wheel, and a very light quick adjust string type sling with a narrow leather pad that you would have on over one shoulder but across the chest. The bow just hangs off the cable guard at whatever length you adjust it to when you walk. when youre ready to use the bow, just lift and it's off the string. The sling is never in the way, and you never have to take it off. I like to wear it in conjunction with a hip sling when I'm in the stand, I put a cam wheel in the hip sling and just stand there at the ready with the bow vertical (no hands)with both hands in my muff keeping warm. Then just lift slightly and I'm ready to shoot.

When I heard that they may be discontinuing selling them, I bought 2. I've been using mine for going on 25 yrs now. I have had to replace the cord once, called up Shaffer and they sent me enough cord free, but other than that, it's very durable. I actually decided on what type of bow my last purchase was going to be based on my sling mount. Mission Ballistic, still has the cable guard.

Specialty outdoor products makes a sling They call the Ultimate Sling. It is kind of a rubber strap. I bought it at the RMEF show in Vegas a few years back, from the guy who's picture is on the website. He talked it up and showed how it stayed on your shoulder unlike most slings that constantly slide off. He was right. It's an awesome sling, and hangs on your shoulder. They make one for a gun and one for a Bow. I bought the one for the Gun, and made my own cord hooks for my bow. I use it out west on my bow and take of the cord hooks to use on my shotgun for deer back in Ohio and Indiana. I won't leave home without it, except this year in Indiana, I forgot it as it was still in my bow case. What a drag to lug a heavy shotgun around all day. I am considering buying another. I will vouch for this sling and how much better I think it preforms over others I have used. Out west, when I drop my bow to be ready, the strap just rides on my shoulder and I may walk for half an hour with it just sitting there, no weight, never falling off. Kifaru Gunbearer works if you're wearing a pack. My bow sits hanging right under my left arm and I can rest my hand on it. Bottom limb pocket goes in the "pouch" with the quick release strap from string to shoulder strap.

I have the specialty outdoors sling for both bow and rifle. I love it for my rifle but don't care for it on my bow as the sling contacts the bow strings and I don't want to risk damaging the strings from abrasion while walking around.

If I'm hiking a good distance to camp, I'll use my Primos for the hike, then carry my bow. Another item I use is the Crooked Horn Bow hook which integrates with your backpack. I don't use it while hiking but it's handy when you need both hands to do something.

I don't prefer to use a sling. I used a sling years ago and didn't like it. My bow is either in my hand (daylight hours) or on my pack if its dark or extremely steep.
