Tarp users. Noah's Tarp?

Anyone use a tarp like this. The 16x16 is a little over 3 pounds and we are thinking about taking 2. One to sleep under and one to store gear under.

16x16 seems overkill to sleep on. I plan on using a tarp this year for the first time. Havent decided on one yet.

Depends on the hunt.

If you don't know by my comments here yet -<grin> i'm big on thinking of your gear as a "System"

I don't think you can talk about one component..'.tarp'...without considering your whole sleep system. so for example, pairing this tarp with a cheap down bag is asking for trouble on an elk hunt in the rockies.

I went to a light HS Tarptent for mtn backpack hunts....which at 2# 4oz is a palace...not much more weight over a tarp. If you do do a tarp...bigger is better for the coverage. Making these tarps is really easy too. I'm in the process of making a few for our upcoming moose hunt...super simple/cheap. I like the Silpoly over the silnylon...unless its ripstop like the 1.6oz Hyper D PU 4000 stuff.

'Ripstop by the roll' has some good stuff for that inc their .93 oz and 1.1 oz Silpoly.

I should have mentioned. one tent is for 3 guys to sleep under the other tent would be for our gear. We all have good bags.

I have the 12' and the 9'. I don't use walking poles so I rig it with trees or sticks. Obviously, they don't do much for wind but they are not bad for the money. I bring one along most of the time if the forecast calls for heavy rain even if I am tent camping. I set my 9' up in a heavy winter rain storm on a backpack hunt in Maryland. The temperature was right around freezing but there was a combination of snow and rain. I used it as a roof while watching a deer trail. I didn't get a deer but it was a life saver in that situation.

There are silnylon and sil-polyester tarps that are lighter but they are far more expensive.

For your consideration.

This is the tarp I am considering this year. I plan to pair it with a cheap bivy sack for a little extra warmth and splash protection. Planning for two guys and gear under the tarp. Bugs should not be a problem in September in the mountains.

I don't really know anything about the Noah - doing my research too
