Added or subtracted to this years gear list

Postby Lefty » 08 03, 2016 •  [Post 1]

Hunting the forest over the desert has a few advantages.

Ive been going through all my gear and adding a 2nd set of gear for my daughter.
I wont be packing as much survival stuff since Ill be within 2 1/2 miles of a ATV trail or road or 4 miles down hill to a road or trail; with cell (texting) coverage on 80% of the area.. And help with a fraction of the time instead of waiting until Monday.
First Im donating a bunch of old camo cotton T-shirts, They were cheap something like 10 for $3.00 the rest Ill use as sleep wear.
Im swapping out real para cord for some light weight cheap stuff and I wont be bringing as much, Ill carry 35 ft, my daughter the remaining 15.
Last year I watched some fellows cut up their moose with a saws-all. So Ill bring my little Milwaukee cordless and keep it in my meat box. And it will be ready to go if my daughter kills her moose in September
Ive had plastic tarps for cutting up meat. Again I used painters plastic cutting up my moose. Im putting 12x 9 ft in my pack and a 6x9 in my daughters. Could be used for an emergency shelter, rain poncho.
My first aid kit will be smaller too. a friend told me if you cant stop bleeding with pressure your going to die,.. so just a small quick-clot.
Also swapping out my polypropylene underwear for Merino wool
I wont be packing as much water either. There are at least 10 spring heads in a 12 square mile area. So Ill bring less water and m filter straw.
And lots of garbage bags. for trash mostly.
This year Ill take laundry bags for dirty clothes.

Oh and a WapitiTalk.com hat for my daughter for the pic that will be on the cover of Eastmans ;) :D
So what will you be adding for your list?

Crazy as it sounds, I don't think I'm adding anything this year. I think my gear is finally lined out.

Geez, I've been busy this year. Got a big ol' wide/long cot for basecamp in ID. Grabbed a few more game cams this year (have a handful out in ID and will put a few out in the WA permit area this weekend). Grabbed an EXO 3500 (with additional 5500 bag) this spring and it will definitely be nicer to pack out with in SEP. Got some lightweight VIAM Outdoors game bags a few months ago; my elk(s) will be riding out in them this year. Exited to put my new Elk Track knife in motion this year. Lastly, my big Browning base camp tent took a huge dump on me during the ID scout (zippers completely failed) so I threw a brush fit and in the garbage it went. Looking at a few new tent models to grab before season.

Note to self: Get Lefty another WT hat since his daughter has "acquired" his (when I order another batch, probably early next year) :D

Im not a big hat wearer; I ve gotten of decent hats, and my daughter ends up wearing them, when they are new anyway,.. But I guess I should swap out my Mathews hat for a Wapiti hat ;) 8-)

What a need is a good insulated beanie or Canadian toque. Keep my head warm , eh?

Yeah Nothing subtracted this year about about everything added to me. Honestly the list is way to long to even list and I do not want to add up the $ spent over the last 7months since I was invited to Elk camp in ID. All part of the new hunter $ spending curve to get properly setup at the beginning. Camofire and Amazon have been both saving AND costing me quite a bit of $

New boots unfortunately. I went out this past weekend to check camera's and it rained on us the hole time when I got back to truck my feet where soaked so I guess my boots aren't water proof any more :( but I reckon it's better if found out now then when we go up next month.

This year I didn't need anything, but I still went and got a few new toys.
I bought my first trail cam, amd set it out last weekend.
I decided after using the same arrows since 2008 I'd upgrade to the Easton FMJ arrows. I'm really happy with them.
I am going to ditch the 2 person Marmot tent this year, and give hammock camping a try. I already have the hammock, I just need the rain fly and bug net. I am hoping I will sleep better, but either way it frees up a lot of space in my pack.

Make sure you try out your hammock a few times.

I could sleep on anything when I was young. About 35 I had to have more back support

That is good advice. I'll have to try a night in the back yard or something to make sure it is comfortable enough. During the hunt I will bring the tent in the car just in case the hammock isn't working out for me.

Added a new tent. Mine got trashed last year in a couple days of bad wind. I bought a TarpTent Cloudburst 3.

I just won a Montana Decoy, so I guess I'm obligated to carry that this year.

Ha! Since this is my virgin voyage I added everything. One thing I'm packing in is a solar charger. Where I'm going to be I think I might be able to get a little phone signal. Primarily the phone will be my gps and camera. I currently have two small tarps packed. Not the ultra light kind, just normal small tarps.
