Barrel stove kit + 30 gal drum

Was going to use a barrel kit and 30 gallon 18 gauge barrel for my stove (with sand and grate in bottom) in a 12x18 wall tent. Has anyone here done this? Heard lots of stories about getting the barrels glowing red hot because the metal is thin. Hopefully we can regulate better than that. Your thoughts?

It would be nice to have room for that much wood. If you can get the air shut down the fire should go all night.

Not famiilar with the 30 gal,but the 55 gallon ones a friend burns in his shop isn't very air tight and it burns pretty hot. I had a 16 x 20 wall tent and smaller wood stoves heated it pretty good. One was a little Simms Foldup Sportsman that did a good job.The smaller ones that are more air tight, you can burn them pretty hot to keep you warm when you are just sitting around sipping JD, but then you can also bank them down for the night to get more comfortable sleeping temps.
Is the one you are thinking about two 30 gal, ,one stacked on top of the other or a single one?

Used one years ago in 10x20 wall tent, it went about 4 hours per load of fire wood, it would have probably ran longer but my Dad seemed to like the temp around 85 degrees in the tent.
