Kodiak canvas tent

Any of you guys use one? If you have one do you like it? I was going to get a wall tent, but Cabelas has these on sale. So with my cabelas points, a coupon, and a gift card I managed to pick up a 10X14 for around $50. It gets good reviews on their website, but if any of you have had bad experiences with it let me know and I'll return it.

Ive spent well over 130 nights in a Springbar tent. Kodiak is a great copy. slept in one last Friday
Fast and easy to set up,. I have been in 70 mph winds and 10 inch snow falls with 45 mph winds

Awesome! Do you heat yours with a propane heater like a Mr. Buddy or did you get a stove jack installed to burn wood?

A canvas the tent does hold some body heat; I have only used a buddy heater once inside a tent. That was last year while cisco fishing the 4th week of January at Bear Lake Idaho. The inside of my tent frosted up and I cleared the frost before getting out of my bag.
Lots of Boy scout troops use Springbar/ Kodiak , Scouting does not allow heat in tents,.. Ive never used heat in any tents other than a wall tent
( my wife developed a bad habit of cooking in her tent and wanted the single burner stove in the tent during elk and deer hunt this year.,.. A serious no-no in my book( and in grizzle country)
Maybe a jack could be put into a bigger tent and use a floor pan,..but I dont think that that is the tents design

Whoah, that's a lot of cabelas points. I was going to get a 12'x14' wall tent to compliment my 16'x20' until I snagged one on the same sale. Haven't used it yet but I do like its simplicity for setup/takedown and size when stored compared to a wall tent.

I plan to use a Buddy Heater, if needed for heat. I've seen pics of guy's sewing a stove jack into the sidewall but I think a Buddy Heater should be more than sufficient to at least take the edge out of the air in it. Canvas is pretty amazing for staying cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

I was looking at them for quite a while. I ended up buying something else because it didn't have a stove jack (dopey me never thought to put one in myself). Good luck with it.

HAHA! Yeah I hoarded a few Cabelas points! Thanks for the feedback. I'll probably just use my Mr. Buddy as a heat source when needed. Can't wait to try out my new "castle"!

I would highly recommend having a battery powered carbon monoxide detector in your tent. It is a really cheap life insurance policy. I know that some of the Buddy Heaters etc have a shutoff for CO2 but I wouldn't trust my life to those. People die in tents every year. It's not a bad idea for wood stove users either. My brother early died once and I had a heck of a dizzy spell one time. Don't try to completely seal up every little hole in the tent. Leave the zipper up just an inch or two etc. A little ventilation is a good thing.

Agreed. Even when I was using a slide in truck camper I'd leave a window cracked at night.

Great point! I have a carbon monoxide detector I put in my ice house. I'll be sure to bring it any time a bring the heater. You're right, very cheap insurance!

Do some of you cats leave a propane heater running at night? I have a few variations of propane heaters from small to large but would not leave them running while sleeping. They're great for the early morning get dressed/gear up and perhaps the evening warming up of the fart sack but I trust none of them to run while I'm sleeping

No way I'd run a propane tent heater while asleep. You could wake up dead. Happens every year in CO.

I have the Kodiak 10' X 14' too. I've used it for the last 5 years for bow hunting. I love that tent! They make a vestibule for the front that will keep the rain off your gear that you can order from Kodiak canvas for about $100 that I think is well worth the money and completes the tent in my opinion. I have also ordered another set of hanging organizers and tent hammock. I use a big buddy heater to heat it up in the morning and evening, but I don't ever run it while I sleep. I just take warm sleeping bags and it works out fine. I own a really nice 27ft camping trailer that I take fishing but I don't like to haul it in to where I elk hunt. So I use the Kodiak. I've also been in total down pours while camping in that tent and stayed dry.

I have seen first hand what carbon monoxide does to a person and pets a few times. Trust me guys its not pretty. Not to mention senseless. The last one a highly educated person set up a generator in the basement of hunting cabin. His wife called after he didn't come home from his hunt. Sad sad sad.

Thanks for the tip on the vestibule. I'll try to pick one up. They are currently out of stock on them, but I'll keep searching.

Can't wait to set this tent out on a turkey/trout trip soon!

I use a tanktop heater on a tank from a grill in my wall tent. The little bottles run out fast in Buddy heater. My wall tent is 10x12, might be similar volume to your tent. I get about all the heat and light I need in the tent during Sept. from a Coleman 2 mantle kerosene lantern. In Oct or later, then the heater and maybe a big quilt around my sleeping bag.
