GPS Question

Hey folks, my buddy and I both own an older Lowance IFinder GPS. They have been great units for geesh, for over 13 years! Sad news is that Joe's GPS died last year. He started getting white screens on it and ultimately, it wouldn't boot up again. Mine is a few years newer but I did notice it was struggling a bit last year as well (got some brief white screens) and I feel it may be on it's last leg.

Question 1: Can the waypoints on my old Lowrance be transferred to a new unit?

Question 2: What do you cats recommend for a new GPS when the time comes?

I'm not sure about transfering data maybe you could contact the company and ask maybe you could upload them to a PC. As for new GPS I have a Garmin Etrex 20 on the GPS world this is really affordable option. They are SD card compatible as well and seem to be pretty durable as I've dropped mine several times. You can get them in a kit that includes a SD card with topo maps and a soft cast with screen cover. You can buy SD cards that show topo and landownership as well. It uses 2 AA batteries which is nice because thats a common battery I try to keep all my stuff elk hunting using AA so I don't have to have multiple types of batteries as backup much easier one and done back up. The battery life is really good since it doesn't have a fancy touch screen it doesn't eat batteries so I don't usually turn it off while hunting in the mountains keeps my trail logged and I can quickly mark spots on the go that I find along that way.

Thanks for the thoughts Osprey. I absolutely like the idea of matching as many battery sizes as possible when out. Also, I'm a huge fan of lithium batteries... Last a ton longer but certainly more expensive.

Not sure if you hunt in groups of solo. If you hunt with a group the Garmin Rino is amazing. It gives everyone an extra bit of security. I have talked with my buddies at over 4 miles away. We also have the topo maps on them. We all have the 650. I think you can pick one up for around $300.

Whatever your file format is for your Lowrance, you will have to convert it somehow for whatever you get.

Try googling how to swap file formats. I did it years ago with a fishing gps. I would also try and print a copy of your waypoints if possible, that way you will have them if you mess something up. Sometimes you just have to manually transfer them.

I have a Garmin 62 right now, but have been thinking of a Rino as well. Neat units.

I too recently picked up a eTrex 20X and so far so good. I like the compact size and the ability to use a micro card with pre loaded maps from 3rd parties like Onxmaps. And with Garmin's Base Camp you can plan and review hunts on your computer's larger screen. I keep my Garmin on a Gear Keeper so I never have to worry about leaving it behind or dropping it

One thing I've noticed (and I'm sure it's a simple setting) is that the location icon doesn't seem to move with me as a progress through my hunt. I have it on hiking mode but there must be another setting to adjust.

I'm very happy with my Garmin 62ST. I don't leave it on all the time but the lithium batteries I use last a long time and it picks up satellites quickly when I turn it on. Bought mine through Amazon.
