Long range shooting finished for this year

Slipped on a loose rock in a stream and my pack banged my rifle stock against a rock. Broke it clean off! Looks like defective casting. Savage is sending a new one but I won't get it until next week.

Oh well, gotta use my old 1903 sporterized Springfield now. No scope!

Man that's terrible. I bet that was a shocking end to the day.

On the bright side at least your ok. About 5 years ago I had a friend who drew a Montana moose tag. He set a camp in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness. He didn't show up at the ranch on the day he was supposed to. Two days later they found his body. He slipped on a rock in a creek, hit his head and was killed. This was not while he was hunting. He was right in camp.

Thanks guys. It was a low speed fall but the pack was a little too heavy and I couldn't stop it. It was the beginning of the day! About 200 yards from the trail.

I am in Steamboat right now on the hunt, so Highlands Ranch would be a long hike! It is a new Axis. They are sending a new stock. Thanks for the offer, theough!

Thanks. I am good to go to around 150 yds with the 1903. Shoots the same loads as the Savage.

Yea, it is good for shorter distance work. It is an antique so I really don't want to get in the habit of dragging it through the timber. Made in 1914!

Just to make you feel better - my 25 year old son-in-law tripped and fell in the stream while fly fishing this weekend. Broke his prized fly rod, and had to watch me catch fish the rest of the afternoon! It would be hard to argue that you don't need a new gun - wives don't know that gun stocks can be replaced!

Busted. 1st the stock, now you. Seriously, I was wondering if you altered your hunting strategy when you picked up the 03. Looks like U R trying to keep it out of the timber. Maybe if you just went reeaaaalllllll sssllllooooowwwww...

Yea, the strategy is a bit different. I am now looking 100-200 yds out rather than as far as I can see I stayed on the edges of the timber today, checking for different sightlines and watching for any movement within. It started snowing above 9000 ft. Saw a lot of beds under the larger willows. I think those were mule deer. Jumped a couple of them. Next year def going to draw mule deer tags. Saw a dozen already in the last few days. I am wondering if the 03 stock is actually waterproof.
