Camera Suggestions

Not your essential gear for an elk hunt but looking for suggestions on camera. It will be my first trip and want to capture a little of what I see and experience. Getting a shot of my prize (hopefully) is just part of the experience. Looking to keep cost in reasonable range, but know my iPhone camera will not cut it.

Canon Sureshot. I had one before until I beat the hell out of it and broke a button. Not the fault of the camera. I replaced it with the exact same camera, newer model, and bought a cheap little padded carrying case for when I sit on it in my pack. I have a couple friends with the same camera too and we all love it.

Don't forget to pick up a Clip-Shot to go with it! Don't end up being one of those hunters that makes a post that says "Here is a pic of my bull laying on the ground without me in the picture"

Haven't used it yet but my wife gave me a neat camera for Christmas. Nikon Coolpix AW120. Little camera that is waterproof,shockproof and freeze proof. Will connect to cell phone with a wireless connection. Should be a great camera for hunting and the outdoors.

I don't know what would break the bank, these two options are fairly spendy for a piece of hunting equipment that doesn't kill something or keep you warm/dry, but they are cheap in the world of cameras. Any cheaper than this and you might as well stick with the iPhone camera.

My buddy has this, I think it's an awesome camera for size, weight, resolution and cost.

I have this but it's heavy, expensive and cumbersome (especially if you take an extra lens or two), but takes amazing photos with an idiot pushing the button.

Yes, welcome to the Forum! I too have a Nikon Coolpix, have had it for 3-4 years now & it does excellent & isn't expensive, I believe you can get one for under 150.00. Mine is also waterproof, shockproof, etc. It also takes video, I've used it several times in this capacity & surprisingly it takes pretty nice & clear footage. It basically fits in the palm of a hand so is small & lightweight & works excellent with a Clipshot! With the 100's of photos taken with it it's performed flawlessly every time no matter how wet or cold!

I'm not an expert or a pro, but photography is one of my hobbies and I'm also interested in a point and shoot for packing on hunts (My dslr weighs waaaay too much). The biggest mistake guys make with digital cameras is getting worked up over megapixels and zoom (especially digital zoom, which is useless). If you want a camera that can take good pictures of memories around camp and a trophy animal, the most important thing IMO is aperture. You want a wide aperture. Unfortunately whoever came up with the numbering system for apertures was insane, because a "big" or "wide" aperture is the smallest number. Look for something under 3.0. A 2.2 or 1.8 is great. This means your camera can grab as much light as possible, allowing a low ISO and a fast shutter speed--which means a sharp, crisp picture even in low light (and isn't it usually low light in the elk woods?).

I don't have a recommendation of what to get yet, but keep an eye on aperture. It will make a HUGE difference.

I'm a fan of as much optical zoom as I can get in a compact package. In the mountains, even the close objects are far off. I have a palm-sized Olympus that goes to 5x optical zoom, I always carry that in padded case in my hunting pack. I have an older Kodak w nice 10x optical zoom, but it is nearly the size of an SLR, good for scouting. My avatar pic was taken w the Kodak, bull was 25 yds away.

I know very little about cameras but am kinda looking for a good compact. My 1 requirement is that it use AA batteries. I cannot tell you how many times I been with someone whose rechargeable is drained and thus worthless. So if anyone has a recommendation for a good camera with AAs in that $150-$250 range that is durable enough to be a hunting camera, please let me know!
