Slick trick vs Ram Cat 100?

My setup is 413 gr (100g broadhead) @ 310 fps. Local shop loves the Ramcat, I'm more used to fixed blades.

I don't have any experience with the Ramcats, but have used the Standard ST's and will be using Vipertricks this year. They are tough as nails, fly great, and are very sharp.

I knew nothing about a Ramcat so I Googled it up. It is very similar to many other mechanicals that deploy with blades in a forward position that have to swing 180 degrees to open. That system isn't very good for anything but perfectly broadside shots. At an angle you'll get deflection which means the forward energy suffers which can result in less penetration.

I would guess that your local shop bases their opinion on deer hunting. Most mechanical can and will do the job on deer. But when it comes to elk a rule of thumb that I'm sure some here will agree with is moving parts on the business end of your arrow is something you should avoid.

That said Slick Tricks are tried and tested. Many an elk obituary lists the cause of death as a Slick Trick. Not only are they solid but they are known to fly very well. That's what I use. So in my humble opinion I'd recommend going with those. If by chance you have a flight issue without question you have a tuning issue not a broadhead problem.

Between the two mentioned Slick Tricks or Viper Tricks all the way, as Toby says, they're tough as nails! I'm using the Viper Tricks again this year, great head!

Ramcat looks, flies and penetrates like a fixed-blade. It is different in that the edges of the blades that face the nock of the arrow are sharpened. If the arrow does not pass through and "backs up," the blades pivot toward the broadhead tip so it becomes a reverse broadhead. Also, it has a larger cutting diameter than standard heads. I probably didn't explain that very clearly... Anyway, the preference here for Slick Tricks is clear, thanks. I found a similar thread in the elk hunting forum, w thorough discussion of Slick and Viper, so I'm good.
