Whisker Biscuit or Drop Away Rest?

Postby bowhunter04 » 02 05, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Hi everyone,

I was curious what everyone uses for a rest. Do most of you use a whisker biscuit or drop away rest or another type? What are the pros and cons of each as you see them?

Thanks in advance.

The main pro for the WB is the containment. The whisker will wear out. I've seen guys not notice their arrows sitting low in the rest until they bring it in to get tuned. I've also noticed loss in accuracy at distances and believe its due to the vanes colliding with the whiskers (which is variable with each shot). The issue with drop aways is the extra mechanics and technical issues but you still get the containment. Be aware that a lower end drop away MAY not be quick enough for some of the faster bows. A quality drop away will be quieter than a WB in the draw and the shot. If you are striving for accuracy and not worried about technical issues, then go with a drop away. If you want to bolt it on the bow and forget about it than the WB is for you. I sell drop ways 20 to 1 over the WB.

Side Note: Had a do-it-yourselfer come in with a WB that he bought online. The hole was too small for his Easton 2219 aluminums, so he took his dremel and rounded out the hole a little. He melted the fibers together, so the first shot out of it he thought his bow exploded.

Jeremy: It is interesting that my son has the Whisker Biscuit and I have a drop away. We both insist ours is the best and won't change. My son has always been a better shot than me. The accuracy of the WB is not an issue for him. That is the reason I have steered away from one.

I have switched back and forth between a WB and a QAD over the years. I really do prefer the WB for everything except the noise you get on the draw, and that is not an issue with black/smooth finished shafts. I never had an issue with accuracy with the WB, but as stated above they do wear. I am always a little worried about mechanical failure on the drop rests, but currently have a QAD on my bow. I will probably take a WB with me when I go out west this fall! just in case! for a spare. They are very easy to tune.

I'm a drop away fan. I'm currently shooting the revolution rest and like it. I've used qad, nap scizzor and whisker biscuit. Revolution is my current favorite but that too will change as new designs come out. I trust my mechanical drop away more than the biscuit concept. Too much vane contact for me. Archery is a very mental game so I stick with what I trust and that confidence makes me more accurate.

I just got a new bow and set it up with a QAD drop away rest. Prior to it I had always used a WB. So far I can say that I shoot more consistent groups with the new set up beyond 30 yards than I did before. I can't say if this is due to the rest or just the new set up in general but I really do prefer this rest after using it for a month now.

QAD drop away for me too.
But I also have WB in my bow tool kit in case of a rest malfunction in the mountains.
I also believe that better groups are achieved by using a drop away at further distances

I have a WB on backup bows that shoots fine out to 40yds.

I shoot a drop away by G5. I like it ok, will probably replace it with a different drop away when I upgrade my bow in a year or so. I use to shoot a WB, out to 40 yards I never had any trouble with accuracy, when I started pushing myself and shooting 50-60 yards I saw a big difference and changed to a drop away. My groupings were much better at the longer distances with the drop away.

One more thing about the wb is if you plan on hunting late seasons snow and icecan effect them. I shot the hostage (like wb but had three brushes) and liked the containment, but they do wear out and it's always in the back of you mind. Drop aways like the revolution are the best of both worlds.

In December I bought a new bow, and switched from a WB to a drop away. I have already noticed waaayyyy better grouping at 40+ yards than i ever had with my WB. I don't know if that is attributed to the new, better bow, or the type of rest. I wold say both, but at 60 yds, I am grouping consistently at 5-6" between 4 arrows, where I was a little further apart before, and the bow is still new to me, so I expect it'll get tighter. Just my .02. I am worried about the mechaincal aspect of the drop away, but I'll carry a back-up WB, bow tools, and a target anywhere I go, so I can switch if I need to.

Guess I'll go against the grain on this one. I've bow hunted for close to 40 years and shot both fall away rests as well as " biscuits". Never had any issues with the fall away rest until I had an issue...not a big deal as it was only a blown opportunity at a nice spring gobbler here in eastern Colo but that 1 unexpected malfunction bothered me enough that I chose to go back to the WB. It's a pretty bullet proof rest that I just trust more for reliability. I shoot on a regular basis when the weather cooperates & that blasted fall away had to go to crap at just the right time. It couldn't have happened in the back yard during a practice session. Heck no! Had to be on a genuine 9" gobbling long beard butterball! Started to question myself just how a blown shot at a toad bull or buck that I've waited 365 days to pursue might effect my easy going attitude... Not good! NOT GOOD AT ALL! Accuracy may have been slightly better past 50 yds with the dropper but not enough for me to risk another unexpected malfunction. I'm good to 60 yds with my ol biscuit & confident it won't ever let me down. I know, I know, ya never see a whisker biscuit at the big shoots. Kinda reminds me of watching that show the meat eater on the outdoor channel a while ago. The guy smacks a bull moose with a great shooting rifle. Tracks him down & when the hurt bull charges he tries a follow up shot at point blank range. Gun does not go BANG & that poor schmuck was screaming like a little girl. I wouldn't own that rifle any more either. I'm just a simple guy & like it that way. ;)

With the new full contain drop always you get the best of both worlds. I prefer the limb activated rests, like the trophy taker smack down and limb driver. They stay up longer and drop faster. Plus they won't mess with cam timing when you tie into the buss cables.
The biscuits are great rests foolproof rests though and as long as you have very good form you won't notice much accuracy difference.

Drop away. Shot both and just like it better. Not even a "semi-contained" drop away and I've never had an arrow drop off. I still think ideal arrow flight begins with zero contact...

I've actually had several . Montana trap door, trophy taker drop zone, cobra black diamond. All were mid range in price ( $40-70)
Some day I'll probably try another as I liked them when they worked . Problem was a slow fall. Without lubeing you just never knew when to expect a problem. Qad or Ripcord look to be designed better & have for the most part great reviews. Mabe someday, but the more moving parts that are involved, the more chance for problems. . The KISS phrase has always applied to me. ( keep it simple stupid)@

Dave: Try a Ripcord Code Red. If you have any questions about it, just give me a call and I'll tell you all about it. Tuning one is easy and their warrantee is unequiled . And besides, with all that money you make from coyote calling contest, you can afford it.

Didn't anyone ever tell you that bisquits are for women and children?  ;)

I prefer the limb driven drop away rests. I am currently using a Hamskea. I had used Limbdrivers in the past and personally had two failures with them and witnessed a third failure on my brother's bow. I won't use them again.

I prefer the limb driven over a cable driven. They drop faster and do not ever need to be timed. They don't induce any torque into your cables. They take 5 minutes to put on or change, require no tuning, timing, cable splitting or serving. If you have your centershot measurement you bolt them on level at centershot and tie the cord, done.

I don't like vane contact so won't use a WB.

I never badmouth anybody's equipment. its a good way to lose customers. I do have a tendency to judge experience by equipment though (Not good either) I do struggle shooting a bow with a WB. It's like having a hockey puck blocking part of my field of view.

That's one of the reasons I like it. I shoot instinctive with fingers. I would shoot target points before the season...and when I would switch to blades...my stupid eyes would always notice the blade because I was not used to seeing it. WB hides the tip...so I keep my focus on the kill zone.

Interesting. when I started shooting instinctively I started by "gap" shooting and that really helped. Even now I am probably not "truly instinctive" . Not being able to see the tip would seem counter productive for me

I see what you mean. I've always shot better when I just put all my focus on the spot I want to hit...and the sight picture is just "natural"
Of course I have shot that way for over 45 years...so its second nature I guess.

So there's a hockey puck there...but at least it is consistent.

Ok, was just being nosy, the only two fall always I’ve used is the ripcord and now use the QAD Ultra rest. Other than the fletching contact issues I had due to improper installation it’s performed flawlessly. I’m a little learly of it because I know it has to be full of tiny parts to give it the "smarts" to allow you to letdown on the bow without it falling away. Also has warnings everywhere "use no oil" on it, I hope is holds up to the wx cause mines been caught in the rain more than it should have been. Full containment on letdown was the only reason I tried it over the ripcord, I’m pretty sure the ripcord is faster and less likely to fail but I’ve had to let down on my bow too many times while hunting only to get another shot shortly thereafter.

Have to give a plug to QAD as well I emailed them with the contact issues and they returned my email within an hour, can’t say that about a lot of MFGs.

Thank you everyone for the replies. It sounds like most are using drop-aways. I currently have a whisker biscuit and was trying to decide if it's worth the trouble to switch.
